The TEKsystems: 'State of Digital Transformation, 2024' report, makes for a really, really interesting read! Some really interesting insights into how organisations are planning to invest and transform, the returns they're expecting and what they're prioritising to ensure their digital transformation efforts are set to be successfully delivered. I wanted to highlight a few areas from within the report, as many of the findings really resonated with conversations I've had with retail/consumer technology and digital leaders in recent months. The survey found that the top Digital Transformation goals are to:- - Improve Customer Experience and Engagament: 35% - Replace or upgrade legacy IT systems: 34% - Reduce operational ineffiency: 31% - Enhance employee performance/productivity: 30% - Transform existing business processes: 29% Other notable DX focusses noted were: increase innovation, bolster cybersecurity, increase speed to market of products and services, and introducing new products and services. The Top Digital Transformation Challenges were listed as:- - Complexity of current environment / siloed mindset: 32% - Gaps in technical talent: 27% - High or unforeseen costs: 26% - Cultural and capability issues: 25% - Change Management and implementation complications: 24% - Economic uncertainties: 24% - Lack of internal alignment: 22% - Alignment of DX initiatives to business strategy: 20% - Lack of Snr level support: 13% Also interesting to read was the sheer lack of confidence many organisations have in their existing teams to successfully deliver their transformational roadmaps: - 10% suggested a need to completely revise their talent base, - 33% stated that they need many new types of talent in volume, - 49% believe they require some new types of talent in a few areas, - 8% feel as though they have all the skills they need. Needless to say, the digital transformation goals of the surveyed organisations will be virtually impossible to achieve without first: - strategising around how to tackle the expected challenges - building an appropriate talent acquisition strategy and an effective, skill-relevant delivery capability. Financial wellbeing app Wagestream has raised £17.5 million in a funding round joined by a British Business Bank subsidiary. BBB unit British Patient Capital has injected £7 million into Wagestream, with Lombard Odier Investment Managers and Northzone providing additional funding. Launched in 2018, Wagestream works with 1,000 employers in the UK, Spain and USA to enable 3million people - mainly shift & frontline workers - to access an interactive payslip, choose when to get paid, save for a "rainy day", save money on bills and get debt advice. Customers include Asda, Bupa, Burger King, Hilton and the NHS. The company will use the new funding to expand its range of services and become a ‘complete financial platform’ for low and middle-income workers. Shopping discounts, AI-powered financial coaching, and loans are all also in the pipeline. Peter Briffett, CEO, Wagestream, says: "We believe frontline workers deserve essential services and better financial futures. More than 1,000 employers agree. We have seen an uptick in contract roles from various clients in the last few months at Prism. This is quite the contrast from the last few years where it seems contract positions had dried up a little bit, particularly following the new IR35 legislation in 2021. I wonder why the contract market is beginning to pick up. Could it be that as time has passed, organisations are becoming more comfortable with the IR35 rules and legislation, making them less risk averse towards it? We are personally seeing an increasing number of companies offering outside IR35 contracts and this feels crucial to the renewed increase because frankly, inside IR35 contracts are unappealing to most contractors. Alternatively, could it be a form of hedging by some businesses who are still a little bit nervous about the economic landscape, but have immediate projects to crack on with? This way, they can bring in the staff and expertise they need, without the potential risk of having to let people go in the future should the economy downturn. Or are there just a lot of new projects on the go at the moment? Some of our clients who are taking on contractors are going through big transformations and major migrations. Perhaps business is just starting to move again and quick expertise is needed to accommodate the increase in activity. What are your thoughts? A really interesting time for the technology hiring space. Positive news on inflation today will act as another step to improving market confidence. The prospect of rate cuts in the second half of the year has already had an impact in the amount of money the sector is raising at seed and series A,B & C level. With powder needing to be deployed I anticipate 18 months of increasing activity in this area. That impacts hiring. Earlier this week I spoke about rising confidence on candidates in employment to make a move. This will increase leading to churn in technology departments. Already we are seeing strong profiles receiving multiple offers. Whilst it may not be a return to the end of 2021/2022 levels, I predict a strong rise in demand and competition and, almost inevitably, another rise in wage inflation in the sector. Hiring processes need to be on point and efficient. Looking forward to speaking to 50 Asset Managers from Europe, the US and Asia this afternoon about what this means for recruitment and retention across all sectors.
