A few takeaways from the study: 🖤 Physical music isn’t just for us nostalgic oldies; it’s becoming the preferred choice among young people today 🖤 Gen Z are also showing a willingness to pay a premium for vinyl records produced with a reduced environmental impact, with 71% opting for sustainability 🖤 This IRL resurgence demonstrates the unique value of tangible music formats, from higher sound quality to the tactile pleasure of holding an album in your hands (surely one of the best feelings?) Omar Oakes in The Media Leader UK on the increasing gulf between the media that produce content with its attendant cost and risk versus those that take their content from users, without risk and where the 'cost' is revenue share (hardly the same thing). Advertising spend performs several functions including provision of the funding for high quality content to advertise in. Making good content is a risky business and if media owners don't get the ad revenues they need, they will rely more heavily on lower cost and less risky content. Or eventually disappear. Too much of advertisers' money goes into their extended supply-chains, intermediaries and media that has no content cost or risk and which is less effective at reaching audiences and delivering business. How brands can learn from Fuerza Bruta As a marketer and an avid eventgoer, I was blown away by a new production called 'Fuerza Bruta', currently running in the Roundhouse Kentish Town - an Argentine show that I can only describe as Glastonbury levels of creativity. From a marketing POV, there were a lot of takeaways and I decided to jot dot my ‘hot takes’ on how brands can take a page from their book. #1 Dive into escapism: The show offers a perfect escape from reality. Creating immersive experiences with lighting, physical production and high tempo music forces consumers to switch off from the noise of the world outside and focus on the show. #2 Stir up emotions: With themes of human resilience and connection, Fuerza Bruta hits you right in the feels. How long does a single IP FAST channel last? Very astute question from Graham H. at ITV Studios. So, what's the lifetime of single IP? Easier to answer if the show is still in production. The channel lives as long as there's fresh content. If it is out of production though...? Graham says: We'll need to think about how to evolve those channels into something beyond just single IP. Dare I say, dual IP Gavin Bridge 😏

This isn't good news ... but not surprising. "UK spend for film productions for the first quarter (Q1) of 2024 was £211m, 45% lower than the £381m reported in the first three months of 2023" "For Q1 2024, the total number of films that started production was 22, which is 19 fewer than the 41 reported for Q1 2023 at this stage last year" "There were 12 local UK features which started production in Q1 2024 (compared to 17 that were reported as going into production in Q1 2023)" "UK films contributed £24m of the total spend, representing a 22% decrease from £31m of Q1 2023" 12 productions, £24m spend - that's an average of £2m per production. And I know I've said this before, but I truly believe that until we learn to embrace the new distribution dynamic with new and appropriate finance/recoupment models it won't be long before this downward spiral nose-dives into the ground ... because that's where we're headed. One thing I hear regularly ‘aren’t you worried you’ll lose work to all these big studios being built?’ On the contrary, I think our stages are the perfect size for the future of production and our team are nimble and adaptable. If a job is too big, we can always hire the bigger stages as and when we need them - there’s so many to choose from (that are all empty at the moment). This article sums it up well.

Lets QUALIFY quality media! This is def worth a read. An excellent and timely piece by Omar Oakes Editor in Chief of The Media Leader UK. Omar references Cal Newport's ‘quality pyramid’ in which minimally processed media — which he terms as “linguistic media” (books) — as placed at the bottom, TV and other mass/broadcast media are in the middle, and social media (the most ‘processed’ of all media types) is at the top to signify lowest quality. ARE PRICES TOO HIGH? As Cannes continues, the article below reports that prices for films are too high for buyers. I’ve been tracking this for a while and now we are just starting to see the beginning of what I think will be a trend in the market until the cost of content comes down. While we wait for the dust to settle on Cannes, I don’t think this will be the first report on this front. In fact, I think it’s just the beginning. There are two big macro economic trends that are at play in the business right now. The first is the overall supply of content. With the explosion of SVOD platforms there was a race for eyeballs. Tech companies came in and the audiences could barely keep up. Heck, I’m only now discovering and finding time to watch tv series that launched years ago. And there is no way I’ll get to everything I want to watch (and don’t even know about because they were buried on Platforms to make room for the next thing). The second is cost of production. With the overall disruption in the industry came overpaying for content. This is no surprise. Netflix started the trend by buying out future rights and paying upfront talent fees for those rights - a business model that is potentially about to see pushback from Netflix, Apple etc. - but also generally, the physical cost of production increased. What is the result? An industry that has paid too much for content that needs to recoup - and guess what? - buyers don’t want to pay those prices. The inevitable result is a recalibration of the market. Cost of content will need to reduce. Ask and Take prices will have to find a new relative equilibrium. And by the way, I don't see this potential correction as a bad thing. I think of it more as simple economics and in all situations there is opportunity. I am, broadly speaking, extremely bullish on the market overall. For two decades the sky has been falling. And for two decades, there have been opportunities. What do you think?
