Natural capital research 📋 A new report highlights the growing appetite for #naturalcapital investments in institutional portfolios, with half of UK asset owners saying they already invest in natural capital or will do so within the next 18 months. Key findings include: 🌱 50% of UK asset owners are either already investing in natural capital or will do so within the next 18 months 🌧️ 73% of UK asset owners would invest in natural capital to support climate adaptation 📈 59% would allocate up to 3% of assets to natural capital The research, commissioned by Gresham House and carried out by the research division of @mallowstreet, a community for the #institutionalinvestment industry, shows strong backing for the asset class, as investors become increasingly aware of natural capital’s potential to deliver resilient, impactful returns. #forestry #sustainableagriculture #biodiversity https://lnkd.in/enxn9Mqb Ally (Albena) Georgieva Stuart Breyer

🌲New policy changes set to boost the voluntary carbon offset market which includes credits from forestry investments   In a change of policy the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has stated that it will now allow the use of #carbon offsets to cut Scope 3 emissions. Currently around 4,000 businesses have set emissions reductions targets using SBTi.   Gresham House has been investing in #forestry for over 40 years. Forestry as an asset class continues to deliver strong, stable, and inflation-linked returns. These have been proven through our forestry portfolio’s strong financial track record. However, more recently, the development of voluntary and compliance carbon markets has added the possibility of forestry investment deriving returns from the generation and sale of #carboncredits, as an addition to or replacement of traditional forestry returns.   Key points from SBTi’s statement include:   - SBTi recognises that, when properly supported by policies, standards and procedures based on scientific evidence, the use of environmental attribute certificates for abatement purposes on Scope 3 emissions could function as an additional tool to tackle climate change. - This will entail the definition by SBTi of specific guardrails and thresholds as well as the rules to apply for these certificates and therefore be considered valid for Scope 3 emissions abatement purposes respecting the principles of mitigation hierarchy. - SBTi will not embark in validating carbon credits quality. Other entities are better positioned to deal with this activity. SBTi will enable all validating entities to have clear access and complete understanding of the demand side guardrails and rules established by SBTi for this purpose.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has unveiled a raft of revisions and resources designed to help financial institutions set ambitious near-term emissions reduction targets. The changes to #SBTi criteria are set to come into force on 30 November 2024. Under the new criteria, financial firms with validated targets must align their operational and power emissions from a pathway aligned with "well-below" 2C of warming to one aligned with 1.5C of warming. They must also meet #Scope1 and #Scope2 emissions reduction targets in a five-to-10-year timeframe, down from the five-to-15-year window they were afforded previously, according to the SBTi. #Sustainability #ESG #NetZero #Climatetargets

We’ve been in equity friendly Recovery but higher than expected US core inflation prints, a stronger than expected economy and tensions in the Middle East are moving our Investment Clock rapidly towards Overheat. We’re long commodities and short bonds. We’re still long equities but stock markets could enter trickier territory over the summer.

Last week, I had the privilege to team up with Mark Cockburn and Cheryl Baum at CEPA to give a presentation at the EBRD H.Q. on the topic 'Development and Climate Finance: Status, Trends and Viewpoints in Challenging Times', based on a Viewpoint Note that we wrote and published earlier this year. The Note looks at the huge gap in climate and development finance, and examines the response by the international development finance community, led by the G20 and the multilateral development banks (MDBs). Among the topics reviewed are: -      MDB reform and innovative methods to scale up capacity -      The role of blended and local currency finance -      Proposals from the Global South -      Impending squeeze on concessional funds -      Emerging trends Key issues ventilated: -      Is the problem just one of a lack of finance? -      What new and innovative roles can MDBs and DFIs play in closing the financing gap? -      How can we incentivise private capital to flow to underserved countries and projects, in view of the risk-adjusted return that investors require? We offer our viewpoints on the need for MDBs/DFIs to : -      pursue a dual aim of volume and impact -      reduce huge debt overhangs by moving away from pricing in FX -      beef up hedging and guarantee providers -      increase domestic resource mobilisation The presentation was followed by a short discussion with attending EBRD staff. Heartfelt thanks to Kaylyn Fraser for excellent hosting - trust that the blended finance event 'Mobilising Climate Investment through Blended Finance' at this week's EBRD's Annual Meeting in Yerevan was fruitful! The authors of the CEPA Viewpoint Note will continue to argue for broadening the perspective from volume to also focussing on ‘how’ and ‘where’ in the deployment of MDB/DFI finance, and emphasising the need for MDBs and DFIs to increase the share of local currency in their finance offer – by working with swap providers, absorbing a measure of currency risk on own account and partnering with local infrastructure/development banks – to stem the build-up of large FX-denominated debt overhangs.

I’m looking forward to speaking at #RIEurope2024 tomorrow, sharing thoughts on how investors can make a start on nature, based on our own experience at Scottish Widows, including: 1. Understand exposure to nature related dependencies and impacts in your investment portfolio 2. Develop engagement priorities based on the outcomes of that analysis 3. Explore nature related investment opportunities across different asset classes (suitable for pension funds…) 4. Assess what meaningful nature related data is available from data providers and asset managers - and what you are going to do with it (action beyond reporting) 5. Look at tangible sub-themes such as water, waste and deforestation which may be easier to start with than a complex biodiversity footprint
