While the UK's overall alcohol market is facing a decline, the low/no segment is absolutely 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜! 🚀 According to the yesterdays IWSR report: 📈 No/low-alcohol volumes grew by 47% from 2022 to 2023! 𝗬𝗲𝘀 - 𝟰𝟳%!! 🔮 Forecasted +19% CAGR from 2023 to 2028. 💷 Adding £800m in value by 2028. Consumer demand for sugar reduction and zero sugar offerings is driving the need for cleaner tasting sugar-reduced beverages. Currently within the total soft drinks category in Europe, no and low-calorie products account for 41% of the market which is up from 26% from 5 years ago, this equates to an additional +10 billion litres per annum switch in consumption from full sugar to low / no sugar. One of the stand out countries in Europe is the UK, no and low-calorie drinks make up 72% of the category in 2023, up from 56% in 2018, driven by both the implementation of sugar taxes and the increase in consumer demand for healthier beverages choices. UNESDA, who represents the European soft drinks association has committed to reduce average added sugars in soft drinks by another 10% from 2019-2025 across the EU-27 and the UK. Some things are worth subscribing, some aren't. Through a pandemic and out the other side, the prevalence of online purchasing and all-in-one subscriptions has skyrocketed. Most of them sell you on convenience (whether time-convienence or variety-convenience), but what about everlasting-convenience (convenient quality with necessity)? Is Beyond Meat Beyond Salvation ? Will its Product revamp, coupled with a price hike, reduction in costs, McD tie up and expansion into the Baltic Nations and a new campaign work or is it a case of to little to late ? Much as one would like the company to strive and thrive the current strategy appears to be a way to show " we have learnt, corrected and the future is bright" picture to raise money ? Its difficult to talk about a business one is far removed from and has a very limited understanding of. At the risk of being wrong and eating not plant based meat but my words quite soon -Let me say that its time to wake up and smell the coffee! The market for plant based meat is declining, while a lot of what is being done is required, cutting costs of both products and overheads far more aggressively, cutting prices and creating simpler foods is what is required. Expanding distribution, spending some precious $ on some health endorsements and raising prices may not help! Buckle up ! Great news, but i'd love to know your thoughts, These results show an almost 29% reduction in added sugar consumption for chikdrem and 40% in adults. However, there's lurks a bigger risk: many have switched to artificially sweetened drinks, which are linked to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, gut disorders, and more. Producing more low-sugar options that are well-formulated, offering flavour without compromising health is the way forward, but big manufacturing needs to be all over this with better formulations and no get out of jail card for being hit with sugar tax by just replacing one 'bad' ingredient for another more fatal ingredient. Stevia glycosides and sucralose, are widely used as sugar substitutes in these low calorie /zero sugar drinks. While they help reduce calorie intake, they come with potential health risks: Stevia Glycosides: Digestive Issues: Can cause bloating, nausea, and diarrhea in some individuals. Blood Sugar Impact: Despite being non-caloric, studies suggest they negatively affect insulin and glucose levels. Gut Health: negatively affects gut microbiota, leading to digestive disorders. Metabolic Effects: Some studies link it to altered glucose and insulin responses, potentially increasing diabetes risk. Heat Instability: When heated,(pasteurised) it can break down into potentially harmful compounds. Our soft drinks are laced with these harmful sweeteners. do we solved one problem but created a bigger one. ✨ LET'S TALK ABOUT COCKTAILS✨ It's one of the alcoholic drink sectors which has bounced back post COVID, with RTD alcoholic drinks outperforming other categories, but where do RTD cocktails and drinks go as we head through 2024? The category is one of the major winners of the last few years, although predominantly in the 18-34 age range, with 61% of sales coming from this demographic. With the broad options the category has, when it comes to raw ingredients, spirits and mixers, it's possible that RTD may go in several directions: 🍸 NO-LO EXPANSION It's no secret anymore that no- and low- alcohol drinks are more than just a "splash" (see what we did there 👀) in the market, with sales of these options increasing 47% between 2022 and 2023. With forecast volume CAGR of +19%, 2023 to 2028, RTD drinks companies cannot afford to ignore the no and low market. Larger brands have already jumped well and truly onto the bandwagon, but expect to see the SMEs and smaller players looking to produce options to cater to the market. 🍹 FANTASTIC FLAVOURS We've talked a few times in the past about new flavour trends and where we expect to see the food and beverage industry head, and RTD cocktails are no different. As more options flood into the market, it will become harder to stand out as a product on shelf. On top of clever packaging/branding, expect new flavour trends to push consumers into trying something new. Whether it be smoked cocktails, odes to the Caribbean or other world cultures, or the use of alternate spirits such as Mezcal, Arrack or Sake, consumers looking to broaden their horizons are set for a lot of interest in the sector as time progresses. 🍷 SUPERB SOURCING Continuing on with market "oversaturation", as more RTD products continue to appear, sourcing and ingredients will become a bigger port of call to differentiate from the competition. It's easy to create cocktails using the biggest brands, simple sugar syrup and cheap flavours, but taking time to soure, and caring about ingredients can go a long way in making products stand out. Use of natural, clean-label ingredients and alternate "exotics" such as agave syrup (👀), small brand spirits and quality fruit juices/purees, can cause products to punch well above others around them. Pricing, as always, remains a strong factor with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, but premiumisation and top-shelf products may find a suitable space in this category, we feel. May brought lacklustre results for Scottish retailers, with total sales increasing a mere 0.1% compared to the previous year. Adjusted for inflation, sales actually dipped 0.5%. While food sales grew by 1.1%, non-food sales dropped by 0.8%. Despite the subdued figures, retailers remain optimistic about the summer months, citing upcoming events like the Olympics and the Euros as potential drivers of consumer spending. Technology and beauty sales performed well in May, offering a glimmer of hope. Ewan MacDonald Russell, deputy head of the Scottish Retail Consortium, said: “The slight fall is likely a consequence of comparison with a strong 2023 performance, where the King’s coronation and two bank holidays encouraged shoppers to splash out, compared to this year where the splashing was more to do with the miserable weather. “Food and drink sales continue to grow, albeit in a more modest manner now food price inflation has stabilised. UK soft-drink maker Britvic plc has rejected a £3.1bn takeover bid from Carlsberg Group , saying the Danish brewer was “significantly” undervaluing a group whose brands include Robinsons and Fruit Shoot. Carlsberg made an initial bid of 1,200 pence per share earlier this month, before sweetening its all-cash proposal to 1,250p, which London-listed Britvic rejected on June 17. As well as producing its own brands, Britvic is PepsiCo’s bottler in the UK. Carlsberg is PepsiCo’s bottler in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Cambodia and Laos. The brewer of Kronenbourg and Tuborg said the acquisition of Britvic would offer it “long-term growth opportunities”. It said it was considering its position after Britvic rebuffed its second bid. The acquisition of Britvic would offer Carlsberg the opportunity to expand its drinks bottling in Britain, for both alcoholic and refreshing beverages products. Poll Insights: Key Executive Roles in Driving Industry Innovation Last week, we asked our network which executive role is most crucial for driving innovation in response to changing consumer trends within the food and ingredients sector. The results are insightful and reflect the strategic priorities that are top of mind for industry leaders. Here’s how the votes were cast: Chief Innovation Officer: 44% Marketing Director: 32% Product Development Lead: 19% Chief Sustainability Officer: 5% Analysis of Results: The Chief Innovation Officer emerged as the clear leader, chosen by nearly half of the respondents. This highlights the growing recognition of the need for dedicated leadership focused squarely on innovation as a driving force for adapting to and capitalizing on new consumer trends. The Marketing Director also received a significant portion of the vote, underscoring the importance of market-driven strategies and the role of marketing in communicating innovative product benefits to consumers. Interestingly, while the Product Development Lead plays a direct role in creating new products, it seems the strategic influence of innovation and marketing leadership is viewed as even more crucial in steering companies through evolving market landscapes.
