Great to catch up with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) team last week (Cathrine Armour & Barbara Sanderson) at both the 👉 #RBEU 👉 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) CSO forum. We discussed the various methodologies used in Earth Blox to solve #TNFD Data Deluge. There is no 'lack of data'. The opposite is true. Companies are facing a mountain of data types when it comes to reporting under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). With a plethora of datasets available, selecting the right ones for the right use cases can be overwhelming. There are methods which involve using multiple data sources that complement each other, painting a more comprehensive picture of a company's nature-related risks and opportunities. By leveraging various datasets, companies can strengthen their TNFD disclosures in a few ways: 👉 Reduced Bias: Dependence on a single dataset can lead to skewed results. Convergence reduces bias and fosters a more holistic view. 👉 Increased Credibility: Combining data sources strengthens the credibility of your reporting. 👉 Improved Actionability: Different datasets can reveal hidden patterns and insights, leading to more targeted actions. Remember, the TNFD framework is still evolving. A convergence approach allows companies to adapt to future requirements while ensuring robust reporting from the get-go. Finally - #greenwashing regulation! I was more than happy to share my views with Bloomberg, Edie, International adviser and others. In essence, fact based communication is good. Great even. No more just sounding sustainable, but more focus on the actual impact. The new rules force companies to make evidence-based product labels that clearly explain to consumers what their money is being used for. Just imaging all the court cases we could avoid by clearly communicating how and why and what a sustainable product/service is. Let's do that. https://lnkd.in/dRxe2NFq

The new draft from B Lab has a rather interesting Climate Impact topic. In this there are non-optional questions relating to Scope 1, Scope 2 and of course Scope 3. During last weeks #PlasticsTreaty INC4-meeting I talked with Steve Toloken from Plastics News on the recent UN Environment Programme science report categorised #EPS (Expanded #polystyrene) transport #packaging as “#recycled at scale and in practice” on a global level. This makes EPS one of only six plastic packagings, which is widely regarded as recyclable. It is a tipping point for the EPS industry, as we no longer need to discuss if EPS can be part of the #circulareconomy! We can now focus on increasing #recycling and expanding coverage. The aim is of course to achieve app. 90% effective recycling rate, such as in Norway and Switzerland! In Denmark at EPS-branchen - en del af Plastindustrien we estimate we are close and will achieve this with roll out of EPR (extended producer responsibility). Breaking news on low carbon and the Labour Manifesto …… Key strategies include: - Introducing a carbon border adjustment mechanism to protect British industries and meet climate objectives. - Ensuring the institutional framework supports reaching net zero and meeting carbon budgets. - Mandating UK-regulated financial institutions to implement credible transition plans aligning with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement. ### Heat Pumps and Low Carbon Heating Support the widespread adoption of low-carbon heating solutions, including heat pumps, through: - Offering grants and low-interest loans under the Warm Homes Plan to support the installation of heat pumps and other low-carbon heating systems. - Ensuring private rented sector homes meet minimum energy efficiency standards by 2030. ### Solar PV To expand solar power usage, Labour intends to: - Triple solar power capacity by 2030 as part of the mission to deliver clean power. - Provide support through the Warm Homes Plan for solar panel installations. - Deploy more distributed production capacity through the Local Power Plan, partnering with local authorities and cooperatives for community-based solar projects. ### Insulating Homes Labour's manifesto highlights a significant focus on improving energy efficiency in homes through: - Investing an extra £6.6 billion over the next parliament to upgrade five million homes, aiming to reduce bills and fuel poverty. - Providing grants and low-interest loans for insulation and other improvements. - Working with combined authorities, local, and devolved governments to roll out the Warm Homes Plan. - Ensuring that no one will be forced to replace their boiler as a result of these plans. ### Details on the Warm Homes Plan The Warm Homes Plan is a cornerstone of Labour's strategy to improve energy efficiency in homes. Key elements include: - Offering grants and low-interest loans to support investment in insulation, solar panels, batteries, and low-carbon heating solutions. - Partnering with combined authorities, local and devolved governments for a comprehensive rollout. - Collaborating with the private sector, including banks and building societies, to provide additional private finance to accelerate home upgrades and low-carbon heating. - Ensuring homes in the private rented sector meet minimum energy efficiency standards by 2030, which will save renters hundreds of pounds per year. - Guaranteeing that no one will be forced to remove their boiler as part of these improvements. ### Training on Low Carbon Technologies To support the transition to a green economy, Labour plans to: - Establish Skills England to bring together businesses, training providers, and unions with national and local government to ensure a highly trained workforce for the Industrial Strategy. - Devolve adult skills funding to Combined Authorities - Reform the Apprenticeships Levy to create a flexible Growth and Skills Levy. What if we were presenting financial and sustainability (climate, nature, people) #impact data on the same page, and in the same "currency" (in $ £ or €), to Boards? My guess is that it would influence business decisions towards creating both, shareholder and stakeholder value. And it can be done - as illustrated by the below Capitals Coalition's easy Board Motion template. It is a seemingly simple, yet powerful, if integrated, step towards including the value of nature and people in financial decision making. I love this sentence: “the new rule is designed to protect consumers by ensuring sustainable products and services sold are accurately described.” I love it because so much of the greenwashing narrative has been led by “well at least they are trying to do something… they are not as bad as fossil fuels…” etc. What has been largely lacking is the root point - which is protecting consumers who think they are spending money on something that changes the climatic outcome. (This may not be a popular statement but…) the second part of the sentence “ensure products and services sold are accurately described” has also largely been lacking in much of the greenwashing conversations over the past year by communications and marketing teams. My observation has been the approach taken is a rough understanding of the CMA guidance without an eagerness to find a way to lean on 3rd party experts to navigate the hard complex and multidisciplinary work required to actually ensure messaging is accurate in the context of deep interconnected sustainability. “Results from the latest Financial Lives survey shows significant consumer interest in sustainable finance as 81% of adults surveyed would like their investments to do some good as well as provide a financial return.” This is a hugely helpful development that will eventually level the market for the better but in the meantime might pop the cat amoungst the pigeons. From 31st May the anti-greenwashing rule comes into force so the UK’s Financial Condict Authority (FCA) is offering guidance… “The proposed labelling and Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (SDR) for portfolio managers largely mirror those introduced for asset managers in November 2023. They include: 💡product labels to help consumers understand what their money is being used for 💡naming and marketing requirements so products can only be described as having positive outcomes on the environment and/or society when those claims can be backed up” The overarching takeaway from this is that sustainability MUST be embedded through an organisation…. 💡Yes legal will look at the legality of claims 💡 marketing and comms will craft them But… ❓who is deciding what products are chosen and against what parameters? ❓Is everyone in the organisation able to speak on the nuances well? ⁉️Vitally - SERVICES must be described accurately… are you a sustainability fund or a fund with some sustainability options? Really good advice here on the complexity of trying to develop an ESRS compliant transition plan and how the current reporting requirement in the ESRSs lack coherence. Our experience so far points to using the TPT guidelines and sectoral guidelines within it and to map back to (multiple!!) ESRS requirements during the process-really challenging stuff but genuinely strategically useful

This is such an important editorial from the Guardian today which covers the role of the public and private sectors in getting the UK to Net Zero. As is typically the case, its not an 'either or' situation - both have a critical role to play; the state to create an overarching vision and direction, backed up with sufficient investment to catalyse the market, and then the private sector to step in and add the power of transformation that only the market can provide. But as has been the case for longer than I care to remember, UK governments (this one in particular) continue to prevaricate and fail to provide the political vision and the 'seed' funding to stimulate the market. I saw it at close hand from 2000 to 2020 with the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Yes there was public money (Plugged In Places, EV grants etc) which did finally get the private sector to come to the table... but it was painful to witness (and overly on the demand side) and even now the UK government is prevaricating on whether it really wants to see a fully electrified transport sector which does nothing for investor confidence. This despite it being an inevitable technological destination and potentially a huge wealth creator. We probably have one more go at this before the UK is permanently out of the global tech race. 'All' that the next administration has to do is to create a clear industrial strategy (renewables, EVs, heat pumps, net zero technology, CCUS, CDR tech, etc) and inject sufficient INVESTMENT to provide confidence for the private sector. I add the caps as focused public spending is not a cost but a multiplier which will provide a return on investment to the UK economy. As many have already said, the UK urgently needs its own Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) or European Green Deal Industrial Plan moment (that hinted £28 billion would be a good start). So come on 'next' Labour, write and publish a clear Industrial Strategy so that the UK economy can align and self-organise to generate a zero carbon future AND and a strong future economy. A firm political will is key, not only to create the vision, but to stand by it over time and create funding paths via innovative carbon taxes that are, in any case, inevitable over the longer term. Yes it will be hard and many fossil sectors will resist, but if executed well, it could unlock some of the $1 trillion that the world's 60 largest private banks continue to finance fossil fuels annually. With such a sustained and clear vision, we may still have time to attract some of that capital and create a wealth-generating Net Zero economy here in the UK.
