In a fresh episode of ‘Architects of Ambition’, I had the privilege of chatting with Giacomo Calisti, the visionary Director & Co-Founder of beyond design, about the drive towards sustainable practices in both renovating homes and embarking on new building projects. Giacomo pointed out, ”We live in a world of commodities, right? Where your Pinterest kitchen is a very expensive ticket item, and then, to add sustainability to it, it's just too much of a challenge for clients with a constrained budget. So you need to prove to them that there is a benefit in making more sustainable choices. If we manage to reduce the cost while achieving a sustainable outcome, it will be better perceived by them.” This particular conversation, along with many others in the podcast, shines a light on the transformative role that small architectural firms across the UK are playing in the realm of residential architecture. Far from just building homes, they're at the forefront of pushing boundaries in innovation, sustainability, and tailored design. On a recent 'Architects of Ambition' episode, I explored sustainable home renovations and new constructions with James Rixon of rixon architecture. James shared, "Trial and error comes from experience. Graduated university in 2011, when sustainability was emerging in design, coinciding with the code for sustainable homes, a topic of my interest and passion. It seemed logical that making a positive environmental impact could be part of our work. Then, sustainability wasn't seen as a necessity but as something to be understood and integrated into projects, with no option for clients to reject or avoid investing in it." This discussion, among many in the podcast, highlights the impactful role of small UK architectural firms in revolutionizing residential architecture through innovation, sustainability, and personalized design. On a recent episode of ‘Architects of Ambition’, I had the pleasure of discussing with Anthony Grieveson, Director at Studio Grieveson, about the growing trend of integrating sustainability into home renovations and new building projects. Anthony explains ”In retrofitting housing with solid brick walls, wood fibre or cork internal insulation with breathable plaster is the obvious solution. However, this often returns expensive quotes due to the unfamiliar materials for most domestic contractors. Interesting pre-tender conversations with contractors, particularly smaller European ones, reveal misconceptions about materials like lime plaster, initially deemed fancy and requiring a specialist. Clarifying its traditional use can change perceptions, demonstrating it's manageable and doesn't always lead to higher costs. Despite the higher material costs, labour and construction layers are reduced, potentially offsetting the overall expense. Presenting options effectively to contractors is crucial, as unfamiliarity can lead to significant markups.” This discussion, among many others featured in the podcast, highlights the influential work of small UK architectural firms in the evolution of residential architecture. These firms are not just building homes; they are at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and personalised design. In the latest instalment of ‘Architects of Ambition’, I was delighted to chat with Anthony Grieveson, the Director of Studio Grieveson, exploring the drive towards sustainable practices in home renovations and new construction projects. ”In terms of retrofitting, when it's solid brick walls, the obvious solution is wood fibre or cork internal insulation with a breathable plaster. But we've had interesting conversations with contractors where they’re initial reaction is 'ooh lime plaster, we'll have to get a specialist'. Then I've pointed out examples of it and they’re like 'oh actually, that's the traditional stuff', I can do that! So sometimes it's just how you present it.” says Anthony. This episode, along with many others in the series, sheds light on the pivotal role small architectural firms in the UK play in reshaping residential architecture. They go beyond mere construction, pioneering innovation, embracing sustainability, and focusing on bespoke designs. Thrilled to share my enlightening conversation with Ashvin de Vos from Variant Office Architects on the most recent episode of our podcast. We delved into the intriguing question: What is the nature of architects and how they approach innovation and sustainability in their projects? ”Architects are naturally curious, hardworking people. Our education system encourages thinking outside of architecture, experimenting with new ideas, and approaching design practice. You see practices pushing boundaries when you pick up magazines or visit Dezeen and other e-zines. It's inspiring. However, for every practice featured in the news, hundreds of unsung heroes are developing their ideas and pushing boundaries, often with sustainability in mind. RIBA has placed sustainability at the forefront of their plan of works for many years, envisioning sustainable futures in the RIBA 2030 roadmap.” explains Ashvin. Tune in to 'Architects of Ambition' to catch this episode along with many others! Our focus is on the transformative impact small architectural firms are making in the UK's residential scene. It's not just about constructing homes; it's about pioneering, embracing sustainability, and incorporating a distinctive touch. In my recent conversation with Matteo Sarno from Boito Sarno Architects on the podcast, we explored the ease of persuading clients to integrate sustainable practices into their renovation or self-build ventures. Matteo says "In my teaching, I'm interested in the political context, not just regulations, but why we are in this climate emergency, related to our political system, capitalism, colonialism, social justice.“ Tune into this and many other episodes in the 'Architects of Ambition' series, where we highlight how smaller UK architectural firms are transforming residential architecture. On one of the latest episodes of my podcast, "Architects of Ambition," I got to chat with Matteo Sarno from Boito Sarno Architects. We got into whether folks are open to weaving sustainability into their home makeovers or builds from scratch. Matteo shared, "Today, being an architect means also being an activist. That's my story. With the climate crisis and emergency, you can't just build without challenging the situation we're in.” This chat, along with loads more in my series, throws a spotlight on how small architectural teams in the UK are flipping residential architecture on its head. They're not just putting up houses; they're pushing the boundaries with new ideas, green living, and making spaces that truly reflect the people living in them. I spoke to Hugh McEwen from Office S&M Architects in a recent podcast episode about whether clients are easily convinced to include sustainability practices in their renovation or self build. Hugh says “From a financial aspect, it's looking at the longer-term costs and benefits of having a comfortable and healthy home. Also, in terms of material, what are the benefits of using natural or regenerative materials that can achieve better breathability, air quality, and other benefits. It's about considering different value systems to see how sustainability and reducing carbon is a value system with its own benefits.” You can hear this episode and many others in my ‘Architects of Ambition’ podcast series revealing how small architectural practices in the UK are leading the charge in redefining residential architecture. They're not just building homes; they're pioneering in innovation, sustainability, and personalisation.
