Kings Speech tomorrow. What does it need to include to start delivering the government's commitment to 'end the mass dependence on emergency food'? Here I set out the 4 bills we want to see tomorrow. And the urgent actions that must follow in the Autumn Budget. The Trussell Trust stands ready to work across sectors and with government to tackle the appalling levels of hunger and hardship across the country, and end the need for food banks for good. We know that will take time to achieve. But we can't wait for growth or a long-term strategy - we need to start right now. Read more ⬇

Last summer, our food banks supported 430,000 people with emergency food – and 160,000 were children. This isn’t right. No child should ever face hunger. And we’re campaigning for the change that needs to happen to make this a reality. But until we get there, our food banks are doing everything they can to help people in their communities. 💚 And they wouldn’t be able to do it without partners like Tesco who have just announced an additional funding to support food banks in our network. Their generosity will make a big difference in communities across the UK – and if you’re a Tesco customer, you can help too! 👀 🥫 Next time you’re at a large Tesco store, keep your eyes peeled for their pre-packed donation bags. Each one contains essential long-life items, so all you need to do is pick it up, scan it with the rest of your shopping, and drop it in the collection point. A big thank you to Tesco and their customers for all their support this summer! #Charity #Foodbank

Can you guess?! How much is the basic rate of Universal Credit for a single adult? Universal Credit is falling short - and this is pushing more people to food banks. This isn't right, but we CAN change this. We're calling for an Essentials Guarantee to be embedded into Universal Credit, which would ensure it covers the costs of the essentials. #UniversalCredit #Foodbanks

🚨 JUST IN: Welcome news that the Chancellor has announced the new government’s commitment to reforming planning laws and delivering more homes – in particularly the focus on social housing. Safe, secure, and affordable housing is an essential part of ending the need for food banks. We welcome this news, but we will be seeking assurances the gov will deliver at least 90,000 new social homes a year across England. Alongside delivering the policies in this announcement, we’ll be looking for the new government to extend support for private renters. Too many people are driven into homelessness and to the doors of food banks because their rent is unaffordable, and they can’t find a safe, healthy home that isn’t under the constant shadow of eviction. We’re looking for: - Commitment to making sure local housing allowance keeps up with rents. - A strengthened Renters Reform Bill to prevent ‘no fault’ evictions. - An extended ‘Awaabs law’ so that private renters have safe and healthy living conditions. This week Morrisons customers have come out in force to support their local food bank at the Morrisons food drive! 🛒💚 We want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated in stores up and down the country. Every item you gave will help food banks provide emergency support to people facing hunger and hardship. 🤝 And a special thank you to our friends at Morrisons for their incredible support of us and the food banks in our network. Together, we know we can end hunger in the UK. #Foodbank #FoodDrive
