MAD//FEST 2024: is this the year that comedy makes a comeback? We had a blast taking The Comedy Crowd to MAD//FEST again a few weeks ago - extolling the virtues of making funny and entertaining ads. And we're excited to see that there is a new growing appetite to explore fully developed humour in campaigns. Specsavers' Liz Baines gave a fantastic talk on humour and advertising. (They are the masters after all). Sir John Hegarty and Orlando Wood talked about the importance of showmanship and not being dull in Jon Evans' excellent live Uncensored CMO podcast. (Sir John Hegarty even pointed out that being dull is bad for the environment - just think of all the extra promotion needed to push a dull advert) And only this week Campaign UK popped into my inbox with this: "Comedy and weirdness are firmly back on the advertising menu this year, and about time too." Amen to that. We've seen a surge in brands looking to show their personality, have some fun and entertain in their creative content. Long may it continue 🙌 Our army of creators have been training for this very moment 🏋️, ready to showcase their superpowers. *Living with my PARents* It’s been an amazing couple of weeks for Comedy Crowd Top Talent creators Bec and Sam aka BAMComedy! (@bamcomedyuk). They did that mystical thing that creators posting on social media want but so rarely actually happens. They went viral 😲 Their brilliant video “Living with my PARents” has over 15 million views on Instagram 📈. They’ve managed to react quickly to release a sequel approaching 3 million, and their catchy tune from the video is now even available on Spotify 🎵 Despite what it often looks like from the outside, this doesn’t happen by chance. We first met Bec and Sam as part of the Laughter Lab comedy workshop we delivered for O2 (Telefónica UK) in 2021. Since then they have been prolific, consistent, and very funny creators on Instagram and TikTok 📱 For brands, this video is relatable across generations. Baby Boomers, Millennials and Gen Z all know what this uncomfortable truce feels like. Well executed comedy like this is such a good way of engaging and entertaining a diverse audience. It's been a gruelling but fun and illuminating week at the Annecy Animation Festival 🎬 Some amazing shorts and features in competition reminded us how animation, as a medium, can really hit us emotionally, making us laugh hard or even shed a tear (Omar: it was hayfever, I swear!). The festival serves as a reminder that in animated comedy, no matter how good the lighting, storyboarding, and composition are, there's nowhere to hide when jokes don't land. While we admire the ambition of indie animators who do nearly EVERYTHING themselves—from storyboarding and voice acting to writing, promotion, and distribution—we believe many could benefit from collaborating with dedicated comedy writers to punch up their scripts and comedy performers to find extra humour in the line reads. We are doing an experiment 🧑🔬 It's been proven that content filmed in 360 video generates more engagement, click-throughs and organic sharing than the same content shot in regular video. So why isn't it used more often 🤔? Answer: 🚩 Limitations on how the camera can be used 🚩 Limitations on where the video can be viewed 🚩 The lack of a format that showcases its full potential We believe these challenges can be overcome to generate something extremely engaging and entertaining for a large audience. So that's what we are doing. The scripts are written (and are hilarious). Filming is done (and was hilarious). Edit is underway (I've not seen it yet but for the purposes of this post I'll assume it is hilarious). So #ChortsFest 2023 happened on Sunday! It was 🔥 The Chortlist for 2023 is brilliant 🤩 and we had so much fun celebrating with the top comedy creators from this year.
