Today, the Welsh government has officially launched Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru, a publicly-owned renewable energy developer for Wales. The company has been set up to accelerate renewable energy projects, focusing on onshore wind, across the wider Welsh public estate. For over two years, the Carbon Trust supported the formation of Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru by identifying and assessing the technical and commercial viability of development opportunities on publicly owned land. Alongside Regen, we have also supported the Welsh government to develop its Heat Strategy for Wales. Providing 57 key policies, the comprehensive Strategy sets out a roadmap for decarbonising the heating of homes, commercial properties, and industry as part of its Net Zero commitments. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eez93hJg

What has the packaging sector learned from 2023 that can help build strategies to achieve Net Zero targets? Our Packaging Sector Lead, Sophie Hammond, recently shared insights at Packaging Europe’s Sustainable Packaging Summit on the key sustainability-related challenges and opportunities for the packaging sector. Key takeaways from the session were: 🎯 Science-based targets are now seen as an expectation and requirement for packaging companies, rather than an industry-leading practice 🚛 Focusing on decarbonising materials and logistics emissions will often lead to the most material reductions in the value chain, so engaging with suppliers is key ♻️ Standardising and improving our recycling infrastructure should be a key focus for policy and the industry 📦 The packaging sector is innovative, and many decarbonisation levers that will facilitate companies achieving Net Zero have already been identified

Last week, the Carbon Trust was delighted to host the Heat Pump Ready Zone at the InstallerSHOW. The Zone hosted several companies promoting the latest innovations to help accelerate domestic heat pump deployment in the UK. The key takeaways: 💷 Opportunity for innovators: The event offered a great opportunity for heat pump innovators to meet potential clients, partners, and investors in the heat pump sector. 🔥 Focus on heat pumps: Heat pumps were a core feature of the show and every major manufacturer, installer, and industry body was represented. This gave our innovators a great opportunity to understand the latest sector developments and meet key industry players. 🏆 Highlight – award winners: Thermoelectric Conversion Systems Limited (TCS), one of the projects exhibiting at Heat Pump Ready Zone, was the winner of the award for ‘Ones to watch - New products and solutions for Net Zero’ with its groundbreaking thermoelectric heat pump (TeHP). Congratulations! 👏 💸 Investment announcement: Heatly, another of the projects in the Heat Pump Ready Zone announced a major investment from United Living Group. The investment will enable them to scale up their innovative solutions to streamline and improve the survey and design process for heat pumps. Will Rivers, Programme Manager for Heat Pump Ready said, “it was brilliant to see the buzz that these innovators are generating in the heat pump sector. This made it the perfect place for these innovators to make the connections they need and to hear first-hand about key developments in the sector.”

The financial industry can facilitate the transition to Net Zero emissions of greenhouse gases by shifting capital from high to low carbon activities. As a result, we have partnered with British International Investment and its partners, FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank and Joint Impact Model Foundation, to support further collaborations with financial institutions and their sustainability journeys. Building on the success of the ‘Measuring financed emissions South Asia’ project, this new venture will work with African financial institutions to encourage them to embrace carbon accounting proactively. As part of the project, last week our South African team, alongside partner organisations, hosted the ‘Measuring financed emissions in Africa’ workshop, in Johannesburg. Thank you to all the financial institution stakeholders who attended. We were thrilled with the turnout and your enthusiasm to learn about the importance of understanding financed emissions as contributing towards global efforts to mitigate climate change. 🌍💵 Stay tuned for more details on the next event in August, hosted in another African country.
