About us

SugaRich source downgraded and surplus foods from food manufacturers and retailers and process them into high energy biscuit meals, also known as food product blends, for sale to the animal feed industry. The products produced by SugaRich form one of many ingredients that go into the manufacture of these animal feeds. The raw materials for the process include cakes, chocolates, sweets, bread, breakfast cereals, crisps, biscuits, wet products such as bread dough and apple pommace, wheat feed and other similar products. These products may be: out of date; surplus to requirements; products from failed marketing campaigns; or out of specification, typically because they are either over or undercooked. SugaRich has extensive experience managing food waste streams from food manufacturers and retailers. During 2011, SugaRich handled over 500,000 tonnes from factories across the UK. This produced in the region of 400,000 tonnes of finished product which was sold into the UK feed industry. SugaRich lead the development of the alternative feed market in the UK, making it the natural choice on high performance livestock farms and consequently food producers looking to maximise returns. With this vast reach SugaRich can achieve the highest return for downgraded food products of any company in the market.

BALANCING INTENTIONS AND EXECUTION The food and feed industries are currently pondering the current news about a major supermarket terminating its relationship with an unnamed food waste processor. An internal review revealed that surplus food collected from the retailer intended for animal feed was instead being diverted to anaerobic digestion (AD). It’s a most unfortunate development to be uncovered, not only for the supermarket, but for food re-processors who are following the rules of waste hierarchy as well as honouring contractual obligations. At SugaRich, we are committed to re-purposing surplus food, and in the most responsible way possible. Furthermore, we take pride in helping our clients to improve their methodologies for surplus food capture and reuse. Our practices would stand up to any scrutiny, and we hold steadfastly to the service we provide, without compromise. In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, there’s no doubt that Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants play a pivotal role. The government's Resource and Waste Strategy for England 2022 rightly emphasises the need for greater efficiency in EfW. However, as the food and feed industries tread this path, they must do so carefully and above all, ethically. Doing otherwise would devalue the purpose of sustainable practice, and those who really uphold it. There is food waste, and food surplus, and they must never be confused. This situation reminds us however, while green energy initiatives are commendable, there is a need for rigorous execution. Let’s ensure that sustainability remains at the heart of our waste management strategies. While financial incentives may drive progress, they can also encourage shortcuts with negative consequences. The waste hierarchy, a fundamental sustainability principle, must never be compromised because this is a long game, with far reaching impact for the future. Alex Keogh

SugaRich acquires Choc Nibbles creator, Sweetdreams, to expand its offering to the food sector. SugaRich, Europe’s leading re-processor of surplus food products, proudly announces the successful acquisition of Sweetdreams Ltd, a renowned confectionery manufacturer based in North East England.  This strategic move underscores SugaRich's dedication to preventing surplus food products from going to waste and further solidifies its commitment to sustainability. This development accelerates SugaRich’s desire to expand its offerings within the priorities of food hierarchy – the end customers now being people and not just animals.  Sweetdreams adds an extra dimension with an already thriving business, product and established customer base. Adding this together with SugaRich’s technical expertise and influence as market leaders in surplus food re-use, leads to great potential for the large-scale production of desirable, sustainably manufactured product from the newly formed entity. The former foods sector continues to develop rapidly: SugaRich is keen to cultivate collaborations that support the elimination of food waste, raise the profile of their offering and re-use surplus foods in the most sustainable manner.  To this end, SugaRich has developed systems to align with changing surplus food market trends.  Their solutions create a favourable environment for efficient collection of food co-product to reduce waste and maximise value and impact for further use. Alex Keogh, Managing Director of SugaRich comments: “Our collaboration with Sweetdreams is a key step in SugaRich’s evolution.  It was a strategic decision for us to marry our skills and attributes not only to progress our market position in the food sector, but to also expand on the clearly obvious potential of Sweetdreams’ innovative offering.  Furthermore, Sweetdreams’ re-use of surplus food clearly aligns with SugaRich’s established practice and ethos; this now positions us to allow our many suppliers to take advantage of recycling their offcuts and surplus into high quality confectionery products that are affordable and sustainable.” Matt Stephenson, MD of Sweetdreams says: “This is an exciting time for Sweetdreams and our fantastic brand 'Choc Nibbles.'  Becoming part of the SugaRich family allows us to release the full potential of our range of products, offer our suppliers a unique and innovative solution to reduce surplus food waste, while benefiting from a significant increase in commercial return.  Alex and his team have seen the fantastic work that Sweetdreams has achieved as an independent confectionery manufacturer.  SugaRich's acquisition will allow us the financial and operational support to make 'Choc Nibbles' the number one, value chocolate confectionery range in the UK and beyond."
