The Big Shift. Insurers are moving from process-centric to data-maturity models to make faster, better risk decisions. The Capability Maturity Model has driven process standardisation for years, focusing on cost reduction and efficiency through defined, repeatable processes. However, adoption has varied, with standard lines and SME carriers leading the way, while specialty mid-market firms lag behind. This difference in model maturity is a clear point of differentiation in today's market. In this data-driven world, there's an opportunity not just to enhance underwriting efficiencies, but to fundamentally transform the role of underwriters. Our Underwriting Maturity Framework enables carriers to visualise their progress over time and secure organisational buy-in. Powering ahead: will 2024 be a year of divergence for the use of #GenAI in specialty and reinsurance markets? Following comprehensive research with some of the largest carriers in the market, Oxbow Partners sees mixed responses on the topic of AI adoption. Whereas most carriers recognise the benefits of GenAI in principle, and are somewhere along Oxbow's four-step maturity journey, considerable hurdles remain. Competing priorities, a lack of talent and a 'wait and see' approach still stand in the way of many companies going full-steam ahead. In the Lloyd's and London Markets, fears of AI taking over remain, but Lloyd's CUO Rachel Turk explained that the market needs to reach a point where underwriters remain in control, but supported by AI tools.
