Pathologies such as cancer and premature aging have long puzzled researchers. However, the complexity of shelterin, coupled with its structural variability, has posed a significant challenge in characterization using high-resolution techniques like cryo-EM. John Zinder, PhD, and his colleagues from The Rockefeller University have managed to circumvent this challenge, by reconstituting the shelterin complex and studying its composition and structural heterogeneity with mass photometry, structural modeling, negative stain EM and mass spectrometry. We had the chance to speak with John about his findings and the important role that mass photometry played in his research, orthogonally to other bioanalytical techniques.
