Community Impact Manager at City Harvest London | Award Winning Photographer | Lived Experience Homelessness Advocate | Trying to understand and do something about poverty.

I met this guy years ago - he came to our Soup Kitchen because he had been banned from other places. He was insecure and came a long way to get to us every weekend. I could tell he was lonely. He didn’t have a lot of money, but he was housed in a small one bed. I sort of felt like it was my job really to make him feel like he had a family here. He did. He developed a little friendship group and slowly became more trusting and vocal about what he needed. After about a year of being there, he told me he really needed a microwave. His had broken and he didn’t have the funds to replace it. He said he still wanted to come and eat with us because we were nice. We posted about it. The same day someone from the community came and delivered a basically new microwave. He was so happy. He was crying tears. He had this big grin on his face and wouldn’t stop smiling, hugging that microwave like it was the most important thing in the world. “No one has ever done anything that nice for me before.” he said, wiping his eyes. “I just can’t believe it!” he said. “Do you know, I didn’t want to say anything because I’m not that important but it’s actually my birthday today and this has made my whole year.” he said tearfully. He was wrong. He is that important. It made me sad to think his worth was so diminished that he couldn’t even have basic kitchen equipment. We hugged. He left, taking his microwave with him. He sent me a photo of him with it a few weeks later. It’s the little things. We think people at Soup Kitchens and homelessness drop ins only want money or only have one agenda in mind. Ask them. You might be surprised. #homelessness #loneliness #helpinghands

Good Morning, Radicals! So we're starting off Monday with some Radical myth busting. One of our favourite things to do, especially when it comes to reframing the narrative about homeless folks. So here are 7 myths about homeless people that are easily debunked in case we have any 'it's a lifestyle choice' humans who accidentally followed our page! 1. All homeless people use drugs and alcohol. According to a report by Homeless Link (2018), only 27% of homeless individuals reported drug dependency, and 37% reported alcohol dependency. 2. All homeless people are uneducated. Homeless Link's survey (2020) found that 42% of homeless individuals had at least a Level 2 qualification (equivalent to GCSEs), indicating a range of educational backgrounds among the homeless population. 3. All homeless people are single and without caregiving or parental responsibilities. Data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (2020) showed that family homelessness accounted for over 56% of those in temporary accommodation in England, highlighting that homelessness affects families, not just individuals. 4. Homelessness and criminality are synonymous. Research by Crisis (2019) found that while homeless people may have higher interaction with the police but that this is often due to their visibility and societal factors, not an increased propensity for criminal behavior. 5. Homeless people are unskilled. A survey by Homeless Link (2020) indicated that many homeless individuals possess diverse skills but are often unable to find employment due to various barriers, including the lack of a fixed address. 6. Homeless people are lazy. A study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (2018) emphasized that the leading causes of homelessness include structural factors like unemployment, lack of affordable housing, and mental health issues, rather than a lack of personal ambition. 7. People who are homeless are beyond help. With the right support, including access to housing and health services, many homeless individuals can and do make the transition to stable living situations. We have placed hundreds of homeless people into work over the years. Can vouch! This is a photo of Emma Freivogel, our founder, and our Radical, Steve who was thirty years homeless when she met him. It took six weeks of intensive support and few thousand quid to support him into his first job, and secure accommodation which he remain in, almost four years on. The proof is in the pudding. ____________________________________________ Radical is funded through sponsorship. Our partners are some of the best. APN Group, Sage and Sky are a few of many awesome businesses who support our work and reap the #CSR, #ESG and #SocialValue benefits. Could your business be next? Good Morning, Radicals! Woken up on the wrong side of the bed? Need a little something to brighten your day? Well, we've got a Radical good news story that will do just that! Meet Suranne, one of our amazing young Radicals. Six weeks ago, Suranne joined our ranks as one of our exceptional young Radicals. We registered her for an exciting Programme Assistant role with MyBnk, one of our favourite charity clients. Suranne's journey was supported with two weeks of intensive guidance. We worked closely with her to evaluate her candidacy, refine her job application, and prepare thoroughly for her interview. With a few motivational pep talks along the way, Suranne excelled and secured the position! Now, she’s embarking on her second month in the role, thriving and embracing her new professional life. Young people from BAME backgrounds often face significant challenges when entering the labour market, including limited access to networks, biases in hiring processes, and fewer opportunities for professional development. Our mission at Radical Recruit is to address these barriers head-on, providing the support and encouragement needed to ensure that talented individuals like Suranne can achieve their full potential. Our huge thanks to Leon Ward, My Bnk's CEO and his amazing team of super kind humans for not only leading the way on all things 'diversity recruitment', but also, for welcoming our young Radical so warmly into their ranks! ________________________ Looking for awesome and diverse entry level talent? We could be the recruitment partner for you. Email us at hello@radicalrecruit.co.uk

Do you remember what it was like to get your first job?   Many of our young Radicals feel like they’ve won the lottery when their pay lands in their bank for the first time..   And then reality kicks in….   Because managing the cost of living can prove very tricky when you’re earning an entry level salary and have bills to pay.   As part of our post placement support, we’ve spent countless hours helping our Radicals out of sticky situations because they have never learnt how to budget or manage their money in the right way.   That’s why we love the amazing work undertaken by a very special charity called MyBnk.   They offer expert-led financial education programmes, empowering young people to take charge of their future by bringing money to life.   Radical Recruit are thrilled to announce our new partnership with My Bnk who have recruited 2 Radicals into their ranks as Programme Assistants.   Our Radicals joined the My Bnk team at the start of May and are rocking their new roles with the support of 2 exceptional line managers.   Leon Ward, My Bnk CEO said:   “Investing in young talent is so important to me and so I was absolutely delighted to be able to partner with Radical Recruit. With the support and encouragement of Radical Recruit we have successfully offered roles to 2 Radicals who might not have otherwise thought about joining My Bnk. Equality of opportunity is a good start but its even better if employers can be more proactive in helping diverse talent enter its workforce. Finally, a big warm welcome to our Radicals. I can’t wait to see what you achieve with us.” ______________________ We're in the business of sourcing the UK's best and most diverse entry level talent. We are thrilled to announce that Kirsty Palmer, affectionately known as Smout, has been promoted to co-CEO of Radical Recruit! Smout's journey with Radical Recruit began nearly a decade ago when she first met our founder while working together at Thomas Pocklington Trust. Life took them separate ways, but five years later, Smout reached out about a Project Manager role during the pandemic. Despite facing stiff competition, Smout's exceptional skills and dedication earned her the role on merit. Over the past three years, Smout's contributions to our organization have exceeded all expectations. She is one of the hardest-working people we know, and her skills perfectly complement those of our founder, Emma Freivogel Recognising her outstanding contributions, our Board and founder have promoted Smout to co-CEO. This decision reflects her unwavering commitment and the significant impact she has had on our organisation. We are confident that sharing the responsibility of this challenging role will lead to even greater success for our small but mighty charity. On behalf of our Trustees— Chanel Allen, Woosh Raza Chartered FCIPD (he/him/his) 🍉, Saumya Bhardwaj, Fran Borg-Wheeler and Jude Smith—as well as our delivery team - Holly R., Chris Thomas, Suz Harvey 🏳️🌈, Alisha Bobb, and Em, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Smout. You are an AMAZING human, and we look forward to continuing our important work together. _______________________________ Photo: Smout and Em celebrating her well-deserved promotion with a celebratory breakfast.

We are super excited to announce a new partnership with our newest charity client, MyBnk. This collaboration started off strong with two placements of young, female Radicals from Black and mixed heritage backgrounds into Programme Assistant roles. They started their new gig last week and we've had rave reviews so far. Leon Ward, My Bnk CEO, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Investing in young talent is so important to me and so I was absolutely delighted to be able to partner with Radical Recruit. With the support and encouragement of Radical we have successfully offered roles to two Radicals who might not have otherwise thought about joining My Bnk. Equality of opportunity is a good start but it's even better if employers can be more proactive in helping diverse talent enter its workforce. Finally, a big warm welcome to our Radicals. I can’t wait to see what you achieve with us.” Our Kirsty Palmer echoed this sentiment, saying, "My Bnk do such incredible and important work, aligning perfectly with Radical Recruit's mission and values. Their proactive approach to recruiting diverse talent is a shining example of what every business should aspire to. I have no doubt that our Radicals have a bright future ahead at My Bnk and the Radical team wish them every success with their new careers." May these placements be two of many more to come. A huge thanks to our new partner an congratulations to our Radicals, Sharday and Suranne for landing their jobs on merit. We are excited to see the impact you will make at My Bnk! ___________________________ We're in the business of sourcing the UKs best and most diverse entry level talent. Meet Imran Khan: once at rock bottom, now on the path to a brighter future. After losing his job, marriage, and home, a program called Entrepreneurs Unlocked helped him turn his life around. This government-supported initiative helps offenders harness their skills for legitimate income, reducing reoffending by 9%. Imagine that—skills honed in the shadows of illegality, now fueling legitimate businesses. Imran’s mentor, John Hastings, went from prison stints to running a successful recycling company. One story of many that proves that with the right support, we can transform lives, strengthen communities, and boost the economy. Here’s the irony: ex-offenders often have skills in negotiation, sales, and customer service (thanks to their past experiences) that make them natural entrepreneurs. Programs like these give them the chance to use those skills for good, proving that a second chance isn’t just a handout—it’s an investment in a safer, more prosperous society. Let’s rethink reoffending by supporting initiatives that offer paid work and mentorship to those leaving prison. After all, a job can be the difference between a fresh start and a repeat offense. Agree? Let’s talk about how we can make this happen. _________________ Get in touch with Holly R., Kirsty Palmer or our founder Emma Freivogel for a chat about working together to get some reformed Radical talent into you businesses ranks! https://lnkd.in/evnaYCYP #SecondChances #CommunityStrength #EconomicBoost #ReduceReoffending
