Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the 2024 European International Submarine Races at our Haslar site's Ocean Basin, alongside the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST). The races form part of the Institute’s work to promote the importance of the marine sector and to support the development of young people in the STEM industry. This unique sporting challenge involved 11 teams of university students from around the world using their design and technical skills to invent, build, and race human-powered submarines against the clock on an underwater slalom course. Students from the École de Technologie Supérieure in Montreal, Quebec, were crowned this year's champions, recording the competition’s fastest speed of 5.29kts! 🏆 #subracing #eisr2024 #submarineracing #subraces #submarine

“We can’t rely on the external talent market to deliver sufficient numbers of ‘lateral hires’, so we’re building our own skilled workforce” Hear from Cathy Riach (Diener) on how we are investing in the development of Australian Test & Evaluation professionals through our T&E Sovereign Skills Program:
Australia's largest peace-time investment in defence capability is underway. But acquiring new, technologically advanced equipment is only half the battle. To effectively operate and support this new equipment, we need a significant growth in a skilled workforce, especially in Test and Evaluation (T&E). QinetiQ is leading the charge with our T&E Sovereign Skills Program (TESSP). Launched in 2022, TESSP enables Australian professionals to gain hands-on experience in the United Kingdom, working alongside experts and evaluating advanced capabilities like the Royal Navy’s Astute-class submarines. Cathy Riach (Diener), Sector Head of Talent Acquisition at QinetiQ Australia, explains, "We need to continue growing T&E skills in Australia. The TESSP provides accelerated development through real-life experience across air, land, sea, and digital test environments." A double day of QinetiQ site visits. Yesterday I started the day at Portsdown Technology Park where QinetiQ hosted our monthly Maritime UK Solent network meeting. The subject this time was exploring the ways that space and satellite technologies can be adopted by maritime and the funding that exists to support that. Huge thanks to all our speakers. Space South Central Louise Butt and Tobias Marchant European Space Agency - ESA Business Applications Grant Day and Sean McCarthy Satellite Applications Catapult. Then in the afternoon I had been invited to see the incredible 'international grand slalom of human-powered submarine racing' that QinetiQ organise (and have been doing every other year since 2012) with the support of Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) in action in the #Oceanbasin at #Haslarmarinetechnologypark. Great to meet some of the teams. Thank you Katharine M. for the invitation and lovely to see you again Gwynne Lewis Neve Parker Andy Dinsdale and Emily Hewitt. https://subrace.eu/ (picture from their website)
