I was about to write that I'm cautiously optimistic about Secretary of State Peter Kyle prioritising tech-enabled reform of UK public services. Yesterday he merged Government Digital Service, CDDO and the Incubator for Artificial Intelligence into his Department for Science, Innovation and Technology But this is no time for caution, given the parlous state of many public services. I'm just plain optimistic. Finally, a Minister willing to spend serious political capital on building public services fit for the internet era. So let's just go for it, collectively. Or as Public Digital CEO Ben Terrett puts it in his blog post, "Not bad for week one": https://lnkd.in/ega3c_44

Mission-led government and the critical role for local government, data and innovation by Andrew Greenway, Public Digital and myself: “Creating a strong mandate and rallying support for a government focused on missions across the entire public sector is a difficult task. However, continuing with the status quo is not a viable option. Missions present an opportunity to question the current state of affairs, which has limited our effectiveness in responding to citizens' needs. The longer we allow this to persist, the greater the collective organisational debt becomes, hindering our capacity to address significant societal issues like achieving Net Zero and tackling the cost of living. As this debt grows, the government's impact diminishes over time. It’s time to turn that around.”

Join us on Tuesday 25 June at 6.30pm BST for our next PD Sessions event. Organised with the Future Governance Forum, we’ll be discussing local government for the digital era. Town Hall 2030 is a project about local, place-based digital public infrastructure. The work aims to engage local government, civic society and place-focused practitioners in developing actionable ideas for influencing wider national policy and practice. By way of background, it takes inspiration from #TheRadicalHow, bringing a critical place-based lens to the discussion, and will hone in on specific policy and delivery areas such as employment and health. The event will be hosted by PD's Cate McLaurin with guest speakers Hamida Ali, Rachel Coldicutt and Dave Briggs. Register below to join us in person at Old Sessions House or on Zoom https://lnkd.in/ex_PqW_f #localgovernment
