It's been a busy few days here at National Gas!   On Tuesday, we held our very first South Asian Heritage Month event, with over 200 colleagues joining in the celebration.   Food from across South Asia was served on the day by Claire Mutchell and her team from The Active Wellbeing Society, prepared in the Hydrogen Kitchen built by National Gas Metering- thought to be the world’s first working commercial kitchen prototype and joint test facility fueled purely by hydrogen! We were also treated to a performance from local Punjabi singer-songwriter J Deep.   On Tuesday we were fortunate to also welcome Hira Ali and Jannett Morgan from JennyGarrett Global / Reflexion Associates Ltd for another impactful leadership session for the 12 incredibly talented colleagues on our Elevate leadership development programme which aims to break down barriers for colleagues from ethnically diverse backgrounds.   And today, we held a Women's Networking event, welcoming colleagues from across the business to an informal session to meet other women, share experiences and eat pastries!   This week has been all about celebrating diversity, and connecting colleagues through food, and meaningful conversation, and we're excited to continue this over the coming months 😊 A huge thank you to everyone who made it possible!

🎉🏆 A record-breaking tri-umph for James! 🏆🎉 We are thrilled to announce that James Saxby, Project Manager in Construction, has set a new Guinness World Record for the Longest Continuous Triathlon! James surpassed the previous record of 232.7 miles (374.5 km) by completing an astounding 313.2 miles (503.97 km) for the Alfreton Youngsters Umbrella Provision (AYUP). In an incredible display of endurance and determination, James completed: 🏊 A surveyor-measured swim of more than nine miles 🚲 A cycle ride exceeding 240 miles 🏃 A run of about 60 miles James commented: “It was as I expected, an incredibly challenging triathlon. These things aren’t for the fainthearted but I am proud to have made it through and smashed the world record in the process. I simply couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and friends, and my body is telling me to take a rest before signing up to anything else!” James is close to reaching his £25,000 fundraising target to support the services offered by AYUP in the Derbyshire area, thanks to offline donations from local businesses and ongoing fundraising efforts. Congratulations again, James, on this remarkable achievement and for your dedication to supporting your community! 🥇 #GuinnessWorldRecord #CommunitySupport

At National Gas, we are dedicated to making a significant impact on the journey towards net zero. As part of #NetZeroWeek, we wanted to share some of the innovative work we are doing to transition to a clean energy future. We are thrilled to highlight Lydia Vaughan, our Senior Hydrogen Analyst, whose work is instrumental in driving our net zero efforts 🌍 One of Lydia’s areas of focus is the delivery of Project Union, which aims to deliver a 100% hydrogen network for Great Britain. "The delivery of Project Union is the main focus of my role. Project Union will deliver a 100% hydrogen network for Great Britain, and I am currently supporting the delivery of this as we transition into the next phase, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), and accompanying supporting activities," she says. Her day to day role involves a diverse array of tasks, from engaging with stakeholders to developing funding documents for our innovative Project Union. "Often I am working on a variety of tasks at once and every day is different with a combination of written work and verbal engagement with project stakeholders. I regularly talk with our customers, both current and potential, to understand their future decarbonisation plans and how that coincides with the work we are undertaking with Project Union. I also work on developing the documents required to request funding from our regulator – Ofgem – for delivery of the project," she explains. The rapidly evolving hydrogen economy inspired Lydia to pursue a career in STEM. "Contributing to something that could make such a difference in reaching Net Zero by 2050, and the many interim decarbonisation targets, is a key reason that I was inspired to pursue this career," Lydia shares. When asked about what she enjoys most about her job, Lydia says, "I enjoy having the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who are passionate about the route to net zero, and speaking with stakeholders both internally at National Gas, and externally with the customers we support on the gas transmission network." Her advice for others considering careers in energy: "My best advice would be to always pursue something that interests and excites you, and secondly, take all the opportunities you can to learn and see where your passion lies!" Lydia’s work exemplifies our commitment to innovative solutions and collaborative efforts in achieving net zero. We are proud of the strides we are making and the talented individuals driving these initiatives 🌱 #NetZero #HydrogenEconomy #WomenInSTEM #ProjectUnion

It’s the start of Net Zero Week and at National Gas we are committed to playing a pivotal role in the journey towards a clean energy future. Our CEO Jon Butterworth says “Achieving net zero is a necessity, not an option, and decarbonising our energy system is going to be a key part of it. The starting point for some is to say there is no long-term future for natural gas in this country. But molecules play an important role in our energy system and therefore Great Britain must transition from natural gas and replace it with a greener alternative. That’s why we are working to develop future technologies for our energy system, including hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage. Our latest Winter Review showed that there were some days last winter where power generation from gas peaked at over 60% of electricity. It’s fantastic to see the growth of renewable power sources and we will need molecules to complement the growth of renewables through flexible power solutions, whilst also fuelling industry which cannot electrify. This Net Zero Week I want to focus on, and celebrate, the partnership work that goes on behind the scenes across industry and government. We are collectively working towards a shared goal of a decarbonised energy system in Britain, whilst ensuring it is one which is secure and affordable. The journey has begun, and we are committed to our role in securing Britain’s energy – both today and into the future.”

🚶♂️10 Million Steps and Counting! 🚶♀️   Over 70 colleagues at National Gas completed a step challenge, collectively walking the length of the National Transmission network and raising funds for our charity partner Barnardo's.   The challenge was set up as a joint initiative between Barnardo's and wellbeing representatives in System Operations, who joined forces under the strapline ‘Stronger Together’. Chief Executive Jon Butterworth and System Operations Director Ian Radley were among those joining in with this fantastic initiative. Our enthusiastic participants shared photos of their step adventures, with the best ones receiving prizes at the recent System Operations town hall. The positive impact on wellbeing was palpable: 🌟 “I love how the NTS Ultimate Step Challenge has brought so many people together to achieve a common goal. We all felt a true sense of purpose and contributed meaningfully irrespective of individual abilities or geographic location.” 🌟 “The challenge has been brilliant! It got me out walking more and it was great to see everyone working together or competing against each other!” 🌟 “I’ve enjoyed the team element and striving together. The ‘Stronger Together’ title sums it up perfectly.” 🌟 “A bit of healthy competition is motivating, and this activity has really helped me.” Due to popular demand, a new step challenge is already underway – so keep an eye out 👀 #StrongerTogether #Wellbeing #Community
