Take a moment to experience the tranquilly of the healthy blanket bog from wherever you are today. Our upland moors play an important part in good water management by holding water on higher ground for longer, providing natural flood management and aiding wildfire resilience by slowing the flow of water downstream. We've been working with one of our partners, Severn Trent, on moors across the Peak District to restore this precious landscape #moorlands #blanketbog #sphagnummoss #biodiversity #carbon #water #worldpeatlandsday

Protecting the uplands for the benefit of us all
About us
Since 2003 we have developed and delivered a landscape scale programme of blanket bog restoration. We have used more than £30 million to conserve and repair the moors of the Peak District and South Pennines. Using innovative conservation techniques we have transformed over 35 sq km of black degraded peat in the Peak District National Park, South Pennine Moors Special Area of Conservation and West Pennine Moors SSSI. We have developed a monitoring programme to provide evidence of the effectiveness of these techniques, and our continually evolving communications aim to inspire people to care for these special places. Our work is delivered by the Moors for the Future staff team through the Peak District National Park Authority as the lead and accountable body. It is supported through its partners including the Environment Agency, Natural England, National Trust, RSPB, Severn Trent Water, United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Pennine Prospects and representatives of the moorland owner and farming community.

Last week we were lucky enough to host a site visit on The Roaches in Staffordshire for the National Landscapes Conference. The site, owned by Peak District National Park and managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, was severely damaged by wildfire in 2018 and is still in recovery. You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eDktBKPF

Snailsden moor, close to Winscar reservoir, is an absolutely stunning area and home to many ground nesting birds at this time of year. The site is a SSSI, as well as being a South Pennine Moors Special Area of Conservation and the Peak District Moors ‘Special Protection Area’. In 2022 we began restoration works to improve approximately 416 hectares of badly degraded blanket bog to improve water quality by reducing peat erosion into water courses. Also to protect an historic environment that dates back over 9,000 years. If your group, business or organisation would like to get involved by joining us on a sphagnum moss planting day from September 2024 onwards, do get in contact: https://lnkd.in/e327F59e

The benefits of moorland restoration includes natural flood management. Returning vegetation to hillsides of bare peat, and blocking gullies slows the flow of water from the moors. #NFM #naturebasedsoluntions #biodiversity #slowtheflow #naturalfloodmanagment

Our fabulous volunteers are an essential part of the Moors for the Future team - planting sphagnum moss vital for bog building, conducting vegetation surveys to see the impact of our work on biodiversity, taking water table readings in the coldest points of winter and/or coming out with us to events on the Bogtastic van travelling bog experience to talk to people about why our peatlands are so precious. We value their essential work and celebrate them this Volunteers Week with a big THANK YOU! #volunteersweek #volunteering #restoration

Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay – a great occasion to celebrate one of our latest collaborative projects! We’re working with Severn Trent, Nestlé Waters UK, Environment Agency, and the Harris & Sheldon Group, to enhance the Combs Moss moorland in the Peak District using nature-based solutions such as sphagnum moss planting. This will help increase the moorland’s capacity to hold carbon and water, slowing the flow of water off the moor and mitigating flood risk for downstream communities. Also, this work is helping to enhance biodiversity on the moor, increase resilience to wildfire and capture carbon, with the University of Derby measuring the impacts of different restoration methods used.

Ever wondered how one tiny plant species can make a massive impact on a landscape scale? Sphagnum moss is a bog builder, able to hold up to 20 times its dry weight in water, and it is helping us to restore blanket bog across the UK #climatechange #carbon #peatlandsmatter

Moors for the Future Partnership reposted this
Had a brilliant time volunteering for Moors for the Future Partnership yesterday at the National Trust Longshaw estate, despite the rubbish weather! We spoke with visitors about the importance of peatland restoration for carbon capture, water management, biodiversity, and wildfire risk reduction in the Peak District and South Pennine moors🌿
