We recently launched a report on Nigeria’s informal economy, and alongside it, a documentary to showcase real stories from business owners in it, and how we’re building for them. Whether you call them shadow, invisible, or informal, these businesses are the bedrock of Nigeria’s economy, and supporting them is crucial to improving the economy as a whole. Moniepoint Group reposted this
Just launched Nigeria’s first report on its Informal Economy, and it’s brought me out of my LinkedIn hiatus yet again. This was done in partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and I’m honoured to have had the Honourable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite unveil this report in person. But here’s a bit of backstory on how this report came to be; Some years ago, I sat down with Tosin, my CEO, and he shared the story of Moniepoint Group with me. He talked about people who couldn’t send their kids to school but were able to do so because of Moniepoint. Those who lost everything and we helped them get back on their feet. Hearing about Moniepoint’s impact moved me. You see, my favourite thing about Moniepoint is how we’ve been able to give people their (first) big break. Helping people who are already doing well climb Mount Everest is great, but who’s looking out for those who just need to get off the floor? Those who just need a chance? That’s what we’ve been doing for millions of businesses in Nigeria, many of them in the informal economy. They might look small individually, but together, they contribute more than half of our GDP. Very few know this space like us, so we wanted to do much more. Over the past few months, we’ve spent a lot of time with the numbers, trying to understand this shadow economy. Who are these people? What do they do with their money? The 2024 Moniepoint Informal Economy Report is the result of that research. I have a billion thank yous for my Moniepoint team - Editorial led by Victory, Data led by Habibullah, visual storytelling led by Jide, Opemipo for reviewing over and over again for analytical correctness, and Aderayo for executing the hell out of this. P.S. Here’s a link to the report in case you missed it: https://lnkd.in/e-pEsMPD
