David Wells OBE, Logistics UK Chief Executive, met this week with Lilian Greenwood MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Transport, responsible for the Future of Roads. In the meeting on 17 July, the Minister explained that her role covers all of logistics, including by coordinating with her Ministerial colleagues across the Department, and that she looks forward to working closely with Logistics UK. Mr Wells set out that logistics underpins the economy, employs 8% of the UK workforce and generates £185 billion in GVA and, as such, is crucial to delivering the government’s mission to kickstart economic growth. He highlighted that the sector has strategic, long-term policy priorities, from infrastructure to decarbonisation, as well as more immediate priorities, such as tackling the challenges posed by the EU Entry Exit System and other border regimes and seeing Parliament pass the CPC reforms.

Following the new government’s first King’s Speech, Michelle Gardner, Deputy Director – Policy at Logistics UK commented: “The government has rightly put economic growth at the centre of its ambitions through its first King’s Speech, and our members will welcome the new legislation to accelerate the delivery of critical transport and energy grid infrastructure. With the right planning policies, the logistics sector can optimise the movement of freight and speed up progress to net zero, helping to kickstart economic growth throughout the whole of the UK." Yesterday, Logistics UK and members went to the Senedd and held a meeting with Natasha Asghar MS, Welsh Conservative's Shadow Minister for Transport. The purpose of the meeting was to obtain cross party support for the logistics sector in the Welsh Parliament. The areas that were discussed included: + The need for Wales to have a freight and logistics plan, with deliverable outcomes. Logistics has a key role to play in delivering sustainable growth in Wales. The Welsh government needs a partnership with logistics businesses to unlock investment and enable the sector to maximise the benefit it can deliver to the economy and communities – and the Welsh Freight and Logistics Plan is central to that. + For there to be innovative and integrated transport infrastructure, with Wales playing a key role in a UK logistics network. Wales is in need of high quality, integrated transport infrastructure to enable the delivery of goods in the most productive, strategic and green way, and to link Wales to international markets. + The logistics sector is committed to playing its part to help achieve net zero and recognises its responsibilities. However, the sector is equally clear this must be a fair transition that keeps costs down and supply chains resilient. + The logistics sector needs strong skills partnerships to help it thrive and deliver resilient supply chains that can adapt for the future. To ensure businesses have a strong pipeline of talent to draw from and nurture, careers in logistics must be backed by effective skills strategies, increased skills funding and a sustained commitment to attracting people into the sector.   Following the meeting, Ms Asghar attended a transport update debate from the Cabinet Secretary later that day and reminded the Senedd that the logistics sector is key to maximising growth, efficiency, and output for Wales. Ms Asghar also asked when the logistics sector could expect a Welsh freight and logistics plan. The Cabinet Secretary responded to say that Welsh government will be publishing this plan this year and they are working with the sector to make sure the plan is fit for purpose. Logistics UK will continue to support Welsh Government in publishing this plan.

    Transport Training

That's a wrap then on another fantastic week of delivering transport manager refresher training to Logistics UK member Veolia Three great venues this week. Bexleyheath, Waltham Cross and the last one pictured below, which has a distinctively Mediterranean feel to it, but is, in fact, The Crown Plazza at Gerrards Cross......and after watching England win while there I did manage to get my 'Gerrard is no longer cross, just slightly miffed' gag in. It was amazing to meet some of the most knowledgeable, engaged, and motivated transport professionals around, including some familiar faces from my transport manager CPC cohorts (all first-time passes of course😉). Our mock PI went down very well with delegates, no doubt in part down to some Oscar-winning performances from Mike Jones, Michael Colbourne and Es Shepherd CMILT Well done to all the winners of our interactive knowledge check quizzes which were all competitively contested and high-scoring. Investment in CPD is so important in our industry and the depth of knowledge that these teams demonstrated is proof of just that. Special thanks to the two Mike's for their hospitality and camaraderie, see you all soon.
