Welcome to Gusbourne. Award-winning vintage English Sparkling Wine.

About us

In 2004, when the first vines were planted at Gusbourne Estate, we had a clear vision and a single goal: to create English Sparkling Wines that would stand up alongside the very finest offerings from across the globe. An uncompromising quest for perfection and a fastidious approach to detail is at the heart of everything we do. We ensure only the best grapes are used in our winemaking by growing and hand-picking them ourselves. We present an authentic reflection of a time and place in each of our bottles, by producing exclusively vintage wines that are unique to each growing season. Gusbourne is the only three-time winner of the International Wine & Spirits Challenge English Wine Producer of the Year – having won the award in 2013, 2015 and 2017. We are the proud recipients of over 200 awards at international competition. We were awarded 23 gold medals and 8 trophies in 2019 alone. Today, we supply leading restaurants in the UK and abroad such as The Fat Duck, Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons, L’Enclume, AOC, and The Clove Club. We have exclusive sparkling wine listings at Whatley Manor, The Langham and The Corinthia Hotels, as well as Mandarin Oriental, Chatham Bars Inn, The Umstead, The Park Hotel Vitznau, The Fontenay and the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah Hotel. We are the official English Sparkling Wine supplier of the Goodwood Estate, and our wines can be enjoyed onboard the Belmond British Pullman and Cunard cruise ships. The wines can also be found at esteemed retailers including Berry Bros. & Rudd, and Fortnum & Mason as well as many independent, specialist wine merchants, including Hedonism and Jeroboam’s in London and many more across the UK. Our wines are also served in the Royal Households. Our tasting room, The Nest, is open all year round and is just one hour’s drive from London. We extend a warm invitation to anyone who wishes to enjoy the picturesque Kent countryside for a tour, tasting and to enjoy our award-winning English sparkling wines.

Although many would argue the similarities between English Sparkling Wine and Champagne, you'll appreciate your glass of Gusbourne even more when understanding how it fits into the English wine scene. One of our experts, Gusbourne tour host Julie Warner-Gladish, outlines what makes Gusbourne so special. “When I introduce people to Gusbourne,” she says, “I explain that we’re on an equal footing to leading Champagnes. We're a grower, so we look after our fruit from the vineyard to the glass, and that sets us apart. “It was the vision of our founder, Andrew Weeber, to create English sparkling wine that could surpass his favourite vintage Champagne. And, for many people, it’s only once you visit the vineyards and the winery that you can really appreciate the care and the craft which sets Gusbourne apart. “We’re vintage-only, which is a huge deal in English wine and in our marginal climate. Our sparkling wines enjoy extended lees ageing to build complexity, which takes time and investment." #Gusbourne #EnglishSparklingWine #EnglishWine

Our Gusbourne wines have been making headlines in the press recently at some wonderful events. Here are some of our favourite features recently: British Vogue's celebration of Chioma Nnadi's first issue in April consisted of a star-studded guest list and our elegant and crisp Blanc de Blancs. Our Chardonnay Guinevere 2021 caught the eye of the GQ Magazine team last month, stating "This spicy little number is not only one of the UK’s best white wines, but one of its best wines overall." Lifestyle Director Heather Steele of SheerLuxe has been fulsome in her praise for our Pinot Noir 2022, naming this wine her "current favourite for special occasion drinking". Our vineyards received a shoutout from Condé Nast Traveler, describing Gusbourne as "leading the charge" of the English wine wave in recent years. If you're a fan of our memberships you're in good company. The Independent team have generously praised our Explored Membership, citing "the best still and sparkling wines selected for you to try every month from arguably one of the best wineries in the country.” 📸: Thomas Alexander Photography #Gusbourne #EnglishWine #EnglishSparklingWine

The most important thing to remember when it comes to serving wine – of any pedigree, style or provenance – is that it all comes down to personal taste. What is. right for one person could well be wrong for another. But there are broad guidelines which will help different wines shine – and ensure your hosting skills look every bit as glistening. Our head chef Anthony Coppard weighs in on how to best enjoy English wine with some fantastic pairings for different wine styles. Our elegant, signature Blanc de Blancs is a wine characterised by exhilarating linear acidity, the perfect pairing for fresh seafood. Coppard recommends fresh crab with Kentish rapeseed and lemon emulsion, fennel tops and pickled shallots paired with this sparkling. To best explore the depth of flavour of our Blanc de Noirs, Coppard suggests Twineham Grange (a local Parmesan-style cheese) and black pepper Arancini. This wine pairs wonderfully with meat dishes, with it's bold and rich flavour profile. For our crisp and refreshing Rosé, Coppard encourages local hot smoked salmon – or chalk-stream trout – with lemon and herb cream cheese blinis. Alastair Benham is the man responsible for the lesser-known aspects of winemaking at Gusbourne: bottling, secondary fermentation, dosage and tasting trials, wine storage and disgorging. And while this part of the craft may not be as well-understood or photogenic, as vine cultivation or grape-pressing, it's vital. His early years at Gusbourne saw him setting up an entirely new facility from a blank slate, transforming a former fruit storage depot into a temperature- and humidity-controlled wine warehouse where the secondary fermentation and ageing can take place. "Whatever is happening in the secondary wine production, I'm back in the winery at harvest, blending and bottling. All of which are huge logistical challenges. From a winemaking point of view, I still very much have my hand in,” says AJ. This is the appeal of the craft which first brought AJ into wine and continues to sustain and inspire him as a winemaker as we move forwards to Gusbourne's next chapter. Our best-known vineyard Boot Hill is home to our still-wine grapes and some of our ripest fruit. Funnily enough, Boot Hill was earmarked as our third choice when planting vines in 2004 - it’s higher up and, we thought, more exposed. However, in 2006, gut-instinct took over and we decided to plant despite initial findings. Science and wine are inextricably linked, but - as Boot Hill shows - sometimes on-paper analysis can bear little resemblance to the real life of a vine. In a marginal climate such as the UK, ripeness is king in sparkling wines. It's even more important in still-wine production. It's no accident that most of our still-wine grapes come from Boot Hill. We’ve isolated Burgundian clones in particular blocks that benefit from increased ripeness and these are set aside for still wine production. Base wines from Boot Hill often show a richness, weight and muscularity we don't see in other wines – and often a very discernible mineral character too. Our latest still Chardonnay release comes from our Commanders Vineyard in Kent, a site dedicated entirely to Chardonnay, with both Champagne and Burgundian clones. In its youth, Commanders was one of the earliest vineyards to ripen – in 2017 we picked the Chardonnay even earlier than our Pinot Noir fruit in other parts of the vineyard, which surprised us all, but perhaps shows what a special vineyard it has the potential to be. As the vineyard matures, we're seeing ripening times stabilise, but it's still one of the earliest picked each year. Base wines from Commanders show both ripeness and elegance, with a fleshy quality in tandem with defined mineral notes, such as our newest Chardonnay Commanders Vineyard 2022. With picnic season in full swing, we spoke to Master Sommelier and Head of Wine Communications, Laura Rhys for her expert tips to elevate your summer picnics with Gusbourne and recommendations. If you're unsure about whether to bring still or sparkling wine to a picnic, Rhys says bring both. "Personally, I end up leaning towards white wine, like our Chardonnay Guinevere, and rosé or a lighter red. Gusbourne Pinot Noir 2022 will work beautifully. I tend to go lighter, juicier, fruitier." Seeking the perfect pairings for the classic picnic dishes? Rhys recommends our Brut Reserve to accompany classics like a quiche, while more delicate plates such as smoked chalk-stream trout, opt for our elegant, mineral Blanc de Blancs 2019. For our Rosé lovers, Rhys says our Sparkling Rosé pairs beautifully with sausage rolls or with a bowlful of strawberries and crème fraiche! We are delighted to announce that Gusbourne's 2014 Fifty One Degrees North has been chosen by Robb Report for Best English Sparkling Wine 2024. Our Fifty One Degrees North is our most exclusive vintage and a truly wonderful expression of time and place, named after the precise latitude of our vineyards. This inaugural vintage had previously been selected to represent the 2010's 'Old and Rare - Important Decades of Wine History' to mark the 70th anniversary of the IMW. This prestige sparkling also received a 98 points in Wine Enthusiast magazine, accolades which are testimony to the skill of our team at Gusbourne.
