Spotlighting Apple The Exchange TRX, Apple’s first store in Malaysia, located within Kuala Lumpur’s new Tun Razak Exchange (TRX). Responding to Malaysia’s tropical climate, it is shaded by a series of fins that are carefully angled to control solar radiation. The roof appears to be solid at the lower levels, becoming more permeable as visitors rise through the store. The lowest fin spans outward to shield the glass façade and create a shaded walkway around the edge of the store. A central glazed oculus, with 30% ceramic frit, brings soft daylight into the interior and incorporates a dynamic lighting feature. 🔗 Find out more about the project: https://brnw.ch/21wLl3O #Architecture #Construction #Design #Engineering #KualaLumpur #Malaysia

“I was still a student when the space race started in earnest with the launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957. The mushrooming of innovation required for the Apollo and Soyuz moon landing programmes in the 1960s and 1970s began to filter into architectural practice in a concrete way almost immediately.” As guest editor of Domus in 2024, Norman Foster’s July-August issue focuses on the ‘Future of Flight and Space.’ As part of his editorial, Foster discusses how many of the milestones of aerospace design can reveal the fruitful relationship between art, design and industry, including in some of Foster + Partners’ most notable projects. “The solar-powered Soviet Lunokhod moon rovers can be seen as a reference point for the scheme to regenerate the island of La Gomera in 1975,” Foster recalls. “We planned green and sustainable housing powered by solar panels similar to those on the Lunokhods. The scheme also envisaged water recycling using purification systems developed for astronauts. Later, NASA’s Apollo Lunar Module – of which I had a photograph and model at the entrance to our office – informed our first forays into furniture design for the Renault Distribution Centre and the later Nomos system. A visit to the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center made a deep impression on me … There are echoes of the scale of this space in the heart of the HSBC Building in Hong Kong, our first completed skyscraper. “Other cues taken from space exploration can be found in our designs for the world’s first solar-powered urban community at Masdar in Abu Dhabi. The building’s skin has adapted material developed for spacesuits to combat the extreme temperatures in space. At Masdar, the material works in reverse – reflecting back heat and retaining cool air. In the most extreme heat, it is always cool to the touch.” Read more about the July-August issue of Domus: https://lnkd.in/gj-hCWyR

First phase of Larnaka masterplan commences. Foster + Partners is working alongside Lefkaritis Group, developer bbf: and UDSarchitects to commence the building design work for the initial phase of the ‘Land of Tomorrow’ masterplan, which will transform Larnaka’s seafront into a thriving and sustainable community. The first phase of the masterplan is a residential development that will offer the highest standard of beach-front living. “We are delighted to start bringing our vision for Larnaka to life. The first phase of the masterplan creates a sustainable beach-front community with shops, offices, and restaurants on the doorstep. Residents will enjoy spectacular views of the sea and direct connections to the natural surroundings.” Ben Scott, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners. The masterplan will enhance the land’s ecological value and double the length of the waterfront that is accessible to the public. A key feature is the creation of a new coastal pine forest, with approximately 20,000 newly planted trees, enhancing the local ecosystem and providing a green haven for the community. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e66tm8z6 #Architecture #Design #Construction #Engineering #Masterplan #UrbanDesign #Cyprus

Marseille Provence Airport extension opens to the public. ✈️ Designed by Foster + Partners in association with Rougerie + Tangram, the landmark project establishes an overall masterplan for the future by restoring the clarity of Fernand Pouillon’s original 1960s terminal and Richard Rogers' airside development. The design significantly improves the travel experience by reorganising passenger flows through a set of simple, bright, and easy to navigate spaces. “Our terminal extension in Marseille is inspired by the clarity of Fernand Pouillon’s original work – we continue the main space of the concourse and the structural rhythm of the façade to future proof the airport for the decades to come.” Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman at Foster + Partners. Made from 70% recycled steel, the Coeur – heart in French - is a 22-metre-high glazed hall whose structural expression echoes that of the Pouillon building. It features an inverted beam roof, heroic 33-metre-deep span and a continuous grid of glass skylights. Clad in polished aluminium, the skylights act like giant lanterns, bringing natural light deep into the building and allowing for natural ventilation, significantly reducing the use of cooling. Large indoor trees help bring a sense of calm and relaxation to the space. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e2F-_S8f #Architecture #Design #Construction #Engineering #France #Airport #Marseille
