Delivering the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC)

About us

Elexon plays a key role in the electricity system by managing the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC), one of 10 major codes which set out the rules so that Britain’s energy system operates effectively. Elexon compares contracts to buy and sell electricity in the wholesale market with actual volumes. We work out a price for the differences and transfer funds accordingly. We are trusted, independent, reliable market experts and we provide our services without making profits. As Britain’s energy sector continues to evolve we are working to ensure that our BSC systems can support the future needs of our customers and progress to Net Zero. This includes rolling out Elexon Kinnect, our cloud platform to deliver Settlement and all of our services, including provision of open data on the wholesale electricity market.

Today we are welcoming people to our annual general meeting, and launching our first digitalisation strategy and action plan. The role that we play in providing open and free access to data is growing, and once we complete implementation of Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement in December 2026, we will be processing 500 billion meter readings per year. Access to half-hourly data can play a crucial role in supporting the innovation needed to meet #NetZero. In our DSAP, we explain how we will make this data available, in line with Ofgem's emerging data sharing consent framework. Find out more, and read our DSAP in full: ⌨ https://lnkd.in/dMVBd8TW

Next Thursday (11 July) we are hosting our annual Balancing and Settlement Code meeting where we will launch our first digitalisation strategy and action plan (DSAP). We want to use our DSAP as a basis for new and continued collaboration with stakeholders in the sector, by sharing and learning from best practices on data and digitalisation. We will explain what we are doing to enhance our digital capabilities and the timeline for completing our current digitalisation workstreams. At the seminar we will also give progress updates on Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) implementation and performance against our strategic priorities for 2024/25. We will also have two great keynote speakers: Marzia Zafar from Ofgem and Ben Godfrey, from National Grid Find out how to sign up for the event: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-Kjxnbb

🏳️🌈 Throughout June our colleagues have been busy celebrating Pride month 🏳️⚧️   1️⃣ In the first week of June we heard from Fabian Castiblanco, Facilities Assistant, on what Pride means to him as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.    2️⃣ In the second week of June Elexon colleagues took on a Pride-themed quiz. The questions covered a real range of topics and we learnt about: 🏳️🌈 The meaning behind the different colours of the Pride flag 📝 Historical LGBTQ+ figures including Brenda Howard, mother of Pride, Oscar Wilde and Alan Turing 🌎 LGBTQ+ laws in different countries 🇬🇧 UK Pride history   👏🏼 Congratulations to George Player, Elexon's reigning quiz champ, for taking home first place.    3️⃣ At our Town Hall we did a live draw for our raffle, which raised funds for akt, a national charity providing support to LGBTQ+ youths facing homelessness. Colleagues contributed for a chance to win two tickets to the West End production of Wicked, and thanks to their generosity we raised a huge £1022 plus Gift Aid. Well done to Jenny McGowan who won the tickets.    💬 We then took a look at some Pride posters over drinks and nibbles to learn more about and open up discussions on LGBTQ+ history.   4️⃣ And finally this week we heard from Elexon’s Jessica McGoverne, Director of Corporate Affairs, Chris Lock, Senior Communications Manager, and Maria Cecilia Portabales, Senior Change Analyst, on their thoughts around being an LGBTQ+ ally.   Thank you to everyone who took part in this month's events, and particular thanks to our Pride Take Action Group, Fabian Castiblanco, Karen Lavelle, Eke Webb and Lulu Arnett-Morrice for organising it all.    Happy Pride month!
