Our volunteers got together on 15 June for the first “Spotlight & Social”, a virtual townhall, in 2024. Director Generale Alastair Marke kicked off the meeting by providing some important updates from recent organisational development and his trips to #Spain and #Germany. In this event, we also welcomed new joiners to BCI with two of them shared some fun facts about them and why they wanted to volunteer for us. Through organising regular events for our volunteers to get together, share their achievements in Blockchain & Climate Institute and their own personal developments, we hope to promote knowledge flow within the organisation and foster closer team bondings despite we all work remotely for BCI. Our volunteers come from different parts of the world. We may have various professions, backgrounds and cultures, but we share one thing in common - We are passionate about contributing to fight against #climatechange, we want to promote knowledge and usage of #climatetech #blockchain #ai #evolvingtechnology to propel #climateaction. 🌍🌱 World Environment Day 🌱🌍 On 5 June, the world commemorated the World Environment Day, a momentous occasion established by the United Nations in 1972 and led by UNEP since 1973. To date, it has grown into the largest global platform for environmental outreach, bringing millions together to safeguard our planet. This year, under the theme 'Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience' and the powerful slogan 'Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration', it’s suggested that we should focus our efforts on tackling some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. At Blockchain & Climate Institute, we believe that innovative #technology, including #blockchain, holds immense potential in addressing these urgent issues. The Blockchain & Climate Institute is seeking a #volunteer Communications Manager for COP29 Azerbaijan. The ideal candidate should be highly organized, responsible, and creative to support communication strategy planning and on-the-ground initiatives. Successful candidates must pursue concrete knowledge/experience on UN Climate Change conferences. They need to be based in Baku with excellent (English) oral and writing skills. The selected volunteer will join BCI's delegation to participate in the COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan (Nov to Dec 2024) and is expected to serve the team from May 2024 to February 2025. It’s great to catch up with tacos and beer! We had our social evening in central London on 25 Apr. Although we mainly work together remotely, it’s amazing that once we sat down, we were like colleagues who meet everyday in the office. Never did we need to break any ice. We welcome each other like good friends, exchanging ideas for upcoming external and internal initiatives for BCI, learning more about each other’s day job, sharing our childhood memories, travel experiences, work aspirations, etc. While we have much diversity in our background, profession, and personality, we share the same passion and purpose: we all are eager to contribute our time and efforts to help on climate change. It's been reported* that 2023 has been recorded as the hottest year in human history. This development is not just worrying; it serves as a stark reminder of the imminent threat that climate change poses to our planet and all living beings. We cannot ignore the consequences of the relentless warming of the Earth's climate. Rising temperatures bring about a cascade of adverse effects, such as extreme weather events, habitat loss, and the disruption of delicate ecosystems. These impacts are not limited to a specific region or community; they affect us all, regardless of borders or backgrounds. Following the end of COP28 UAE and the establishment of the "UAE Consensus", we hope the world's leaders can really act swiftly, decisively, and collectively to ensure that the 1.5-degree Celsius target remains within reach. Failure to do so, as scientists expect, will have dire consequences for our planet's delicate balance and the well-being of future generations. In the face of this grave challenge, we, Blockchain & Climate Institute, as an NGO committed to driving climate action through innovative technologies, feel an even greater urgency to intensify our efforts. We will continue to leverage innovative technologies, foster partnerships, and advocate for sustainable practices to create a greener and safer world for all. What is exactly the #environmental and #climate impact of #cryptoassets? In response to the consultation published by #ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) under #MiCA (Market in Crypto Asset Regulation), as Blockchain & Climate Institute we submitted our contributions to set the first Regulatory Technical Standards on the adverse environmental and climate impact of cryptoassets covered by MiCA. All responses will be published soon by ESMA.
