    I love it when people bash recruiters. It’s as if they think they could do a better job themselves. Like it’s as easy as matching a CV to a JD, with no science or substance to it. The reality is it’s one of the hardest sales jobs in the world, it requires way more than many people think. I’m 25 years in and have never met anyone who has been successful in recruitment - who doesn’t have these traits ➭ An incredible work ethic ➭ Intuition and instinct ➭ A desire to succeed ➭ Perseverance ➭ Influence ➭ Belief ➭ Resilience ➭ Organisation ➭ Determination ➭ Emotional intelligence If it was easy everyone would be doing it.     You don't have to be a "business person" to start a business. There's no 'degree' you can take that will ever prepare you for everything that comes with running your own business. For most business leaders, it's trial and error. The willingness to choose action over procrastination 💪 every 💪 single 💪 time. I'd rather you start your business and fail a bunch of times, than waste your time procrastinating until you feel 'ready'... Which I have to break it to you will never happen. Yes, you'll need: 🍀 Passion 🍀 Common sense 🍀 And a drive to succeed. And you'll need to: 🍀 Love what you do 🍀 Be willing to get stuck in 🍀 Accept you're going to get a few things wrong. But ultimately, the only way to build the business of your dreams - is to start. ✅ So what's stopping you?     Did I mention I’ve built a £25m business? 😉 Here's a few things I've learnt! 🍀 You're only as good as the team around you: - Don't be afraid to hire big and fire big too. Your culture is everything, nobody is bigger than the business, make the big calls to make the big gains. 🍀 Play to your strengths and delegate the rest: - Don't try and be all things to all people. Focus on delivering a few things excellently, rather than many things averagely. 🍀 Embed a business development culture as the norm: - Every call and interaction is an opportunity. Think big, with perspective of solving the entire client issue not just the immediate one. Instill a sense of what else can we do. 🍀 It's a marathon not a sprint: - Build your business with short, medium and long term objectives in mind. It's vital to have a clear vision and mission, develop your data and markets, and not just focus on immediate needs. 🍀 Get to know your team: - You can have all the ops, marketing, branding and process in the world. Until you know how each person ticks outside work too, you'll only take them so far. Be a human led leader 🍀 You work for your team not the other way around: - When it's going well it's down to your team, when it's not it's down to you. Have a serving leadership style, coach, mentor, guide and support your team, and deliver tough love when required. 🍀 Have more than one revenue stream: - Think strategically about your business, upsell, look at consistent recurring revenue. Build a contract book, retained, exclusive, and building out a recurring business model for larger accounts. What would you add?     Here's a reminder of what DOESN’T make you a specialist recruiter: ✖️You say you cover an entire country, countries, continents and the globe on your own ✖️You say you specialise in an entire sector like financial services, retail or fintech on your own ✖️You say you specialise in an entirel discipline like, project managent or software engieeering on your own ✖️ You deliver, intern, perm, contract and temp staffing solutions on your own Here's a reminder of what DOES make you a specialist recruiter: ✔️You are fully immersed in “specific” segments of the above and you know the people and the projects before anyone else does ✔️When you have a new role you can put your hand on great people immediately ✔️When a great candidate is available you know exactly where to place them ✔️You take the approach of inch wide, mile deep and are the go to recruiter that clients want to call first and retain. Stop trying to take on the world as the jack of all trades Because the reality is you are master of none. What would you add?

    It’s new school vs old school recruiting - but whose the winner? I’m delighted to be speaking at the Recruitment Agency Expo in Birmingham on 9th Oct 🙌 I’ll be hosting a panel of recruitment experts discussing this topic and how the market is adapting to change. Some of the great tech we now have in the industry is a massive help! But in this human to human industry, can we hide behind it too much? In this market, (any market) building long term relationships will always triumph. You can only really do that effectively if you are having ongoing free flowing conversations with people… - in person - on zoom/teams - on calls - VN’s etc. Relying too heavily on your keyboard will only take your “relationship”’so far. So are you old school or new and why?

    Sales and Marketing people are just as bad as each other. The brash, covert/not so covert, overbearing tactics that are so obvious my 6 year old can see them coming - ain’t gonna fly. Drop the… obnoxious patronising over polished condescending high n mighty vibe and just be yourself Open up conversations by being a human being! Stop portraying you’re the next marketing messiah, branding bombshell, or sales superstar - nobody cares. Yes you have to sell, brand and market yourself to win business, but do it in a way that wins hearts and minds, not sucks the life and soul out of people. What would you add?     An open letter to you all. These LinkedIn streets are dangerous There’s a lot of people out here wearing a lot of different costumes Role playing positions and personalities they are nothing like in real life They know how to say the right things Appear the right way And draw out of you exactly what’s needed to keep their stuff hidden and their manipulations in tact But if you’re willing to see it You can spot these individuals before they cause harm or compound further harm If you accept the notion that typically how a person does one thing Is how they do everything You’ll see loud and clear that someone’s character will expose them every time Your misstep is often that they are so good with words and charm you excuse their character flaws But it doesn’t matter if it’s the guru or the butter wouldn’t melt bestie It’s necessary to pay attention to who that person is Let what they are saying and doing be the supporting evidence If the persons words and actions conflict with who they show themselves to be That inconsistency is a problem and should serve as a warning But even if you see the sketciness outright, the risk is too great When a person shows you who they are, believe them First time Then take action and move on.
