  • Word of the Week is our regular feature on some of the more obscure terms you might encounter in the world of shipping and marine insurance. This week’s entry: MONKEY ISLAND This is a sort of deck located just above the bridge, at the highest accessible point of the ship. It’s sometimes referred to as a flying bridge, and was formerly used by sailors for solar and stellar observations. It houses a magnetic compass, as well as driving units such as VDR capsule, antennae and scanners, weather vane and communication whistle. #amphitrite #embracethechallenge

  • Amphitrite Word of the Week As sector specialists, the Amphitrite team are well-versed in the language of our industry. But while most people know the difference between port and starboard, some marine terms are a little more obscure.    Word of the Week is our attempt to expand your seafaring vocabulary. If you’d like to progress from Able Seaman to Admiral, this is essential reading.  As you’d expect, we’ll start with an A…   AVERAGE A common and longstanding marine insurance term. Meaning ‘damage sustained at sea’, it is believed to have been coined in the early 16th century. An average adjuster is someone who assesses an insurable loss. Marine damage is defined either as ‘particular average’ (borne by the owner of the damaged property) or general average, whereby the owner is permitted to claim a proportional contribution from all the parties to the marine venture. #amphitrite #embracethechallenge

  • Since its return from Covid, the Posidonia Shipping Exhibition has reflected the wider market, going from strength to strength. However, this growth is threatened by a variety of global challenges. Amphitrite’s co-founders, Konstantinos Tampakakis and Dan Boutcher, are both in Athens, meeting clients and brokers and discussing some of these live issues. “Greece remains the centre of the global shipping market and Posidonia remains an important event,” remarked Tampakakis. “It’s the eighth time I have attended and I never fail to come back with some new insights and perspectives.”   Can’t make it to Athens yourself? • Benjamin Jones and I had the pleasure of hosting Amphitrite’s 5th Annual Golf Day last Thursday at Royal Blackheath Golf Club. The tee times were earlier than usual this year, which had us slightly concerned that we may have a few absentees for the 7:45am breakfast. Despite receiving a few panicked voicemails and WhatsApp messages that morning, everyone managed to make their tee time. The start was obviously early enough to get the usual suspects (the Essex contingent!) over the Dartford bridge before rush hour….   So, from 8:30am, 27 marine hull and war brokers set out at the historic venue in pursuit of becoming the 2024 Amphitrite Challenge Cup Champion. We’ve been very fortunate with the weather for all 4 previous tournaments and despite a gloomy looking Southeast London sky early on, it didn’t take long for the sun to come out and lift the spirits and in turn the bar tab. With scorecards in the Pro Shop for inspection, it was time to sit down to a light lunch and a beverage or two to discuss what could have been. “If only I hadn’t blobbed the last”, “it’s these new clubs”, “I shouldn’t have had that lesson” and all manner of variations could be heard coming from the patio. Then the results were delivered and the prize giving ensued. The longest drive award was won by Jack Farley at Lockton, who apparently hit a 320 yarder down the Par 5 13th . Nearest to the pin was won by Alexander Howard-Smith of Miller who stuck it to “approximately” 3 feet on the Par 3 8th. Chris S. of Amwins came 🥉 3rd in the main competition with a very respectable 36 points. 🥈 2nd  place was awarded to past champion Patrick Jordan, also of Amwins with 37 points and 🥇 1st place went to debutant Ben Sugarman of Cambiaso Risso with 40 points. As 2024 champion Ben will automatically be invited back in 2025 however the Amphitrite Handicap Committee will be very interested in what he plays off…… Well done to all the winners, especially Ben Sugarman and thank you to all our broking friends that attended and made the day truly memorable. From everyone at Amphitrite, thank you to: Adam Moy | Alexander Howard-Smith | Alfred Gordon | Andrew MacGregor | Ben Sugarman | Billy Bush | Chris Hales | Chris S. | Doug Lee | Gary Duck | Jack Carruthers | Jack Farley | Jack Nicholson | Jonathan Harris | Jonty Saunders | Josh Hoy | Kris Korosec | Liam Gallagher | Michael Ingham | Nick Roblin | Patrick Jordan | Stuart Lilley | Tom Barlow | Thomas Hunter Blair | Tom Summers | William Freeman | William Kinnear Finally, a special thanks to Janka J., whose organisational skills made sure that the day ran like clockwork, Royal Blackheath Golf Club for having the golf course in great nick and The Bulls Head Hotel and the Bengal Lancer Restaurant for providing the post competition drinks and dinner. Below are a few photos of the day. Until next year… - Daniel Boutcher, Chief Underwriting Officer
