While SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, and Micron Technology are locked in an intense technology race for the sixth-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), #HBM4, foundry giant #TSMC is also poised to support the integration of HBM4 by fabricating 5nm base chips for the memory giants. At its Europe Technology Symposium earlier this year, TSMC announced plans to use its 12FFC+ (12nm) and N5 (5nm) process technologies to produce HBM4 base chips. Acer made a bold move by partnering with #India-based Indkal Technologies Pvt Ltd to re-enter the #smartphone market. Acer's strategic focus is on harnessing India's potential rather than solely concentrating on the highly competitive smartphone market. Under the leadership of Victor Chien, Acer's corporate president, the company has expanded sales using strategies like white-labeling, with promising results in the US notebook market. It is now aiming to tap into India's smartphone market. According to DIGITIMES Research, the smartphone market peaked at 1.4 billion units in 2017 and has been downward since then. The #semiconductor market has become the fourth largest market in the world, following crude oil, automotive, and petrochemical products. With a scale of more than US$500 billion in 2023, it is expected to exceed US$1 trillion by 2030. Attracted by the industry's robust outlook ignited by the Generative #AI infrastructure, Middle Eastern countries are diversifying their business portfolios to include the semiconductor and AI industries. UAE and Saudi Arabia: Beckoning Chinese Tech Giants Various Chinese media outlets have reported that the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority of the United Arab Emirates has researched more than 30 A-share publicly listed companies in China. These include wafer manufacturer Sai Micro Electronics, SiC substrate maker SICC, and IC design IP company VeriSilicon, to explore investment, merger and acquisition, and technology collaboration opportunities. The UAE is not the only Middle Eastern country enticing Chinese tech companies to establish operations. Saudi Arabia has successfully established a Cloud Computing Economic Zone, where Alibaba and Huawei have set up data centers. Alibaba Cloud has formed a joint venture with Saudi Arabian telecoms and AI firms to run the country's largest public cloud service in two data centers in Riyadh. Global sales of total #semiconductor manufacturing equipment by original equipment manufacturers are forecast to set a new industry record, reaching $109 billion in 2024, growing 3.4% year-on-year, SEMI announced today in its Mid-Year Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast – OEM Perspective at #SEMICONWest2024. Semiconductor manufacturing equipment growth is expected to continue in 2025, with sales forecast to set a new high of $128 billion in 2025, driven by both the front-end and back-end segments. "The growth in total semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales already underway this year is forecast to be followed by a robust expansion of roughly 17% in 2025," said Ajit Manocha, #SEMI president and CEO. On July 9, the US Department of Commerce issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) to launch a competition for new research and development (R&D) activities aimed at establishing and accelerating domestic capacity for #semiconductor advanced packaging. Apple has reportedly increased production orders for its new A18 processor following the debut of Apple Intelligence at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (#WWDC24). This move has heightened expectations for the iPhone 16, according to sources from the upstream #supplychain. Prior to WWDC24, Apple's internal demand estimates provided to the supply chain were less optimistic.
