    Based on the screenshot, I'm not sure you're comparing like with like. You look to be comparing a non-refundable not-really-changable economy ticket with a fully-flexible refundable first class ticket. What happens if you search 6-9 months out, when non-flexible business and first seats are still available for sale?

    To put it another way, if $19,500 is "almost prohibitively" expensive, then the airline is thrilled with itself, as its managed to find someone to pay that price, but isn't leaving much money on the table. Commented Oct 26, 2016 at 19:58

    A lot of great answer so only a comment. At the high end you have customers that may be traveling private domestically. Not all private planes have the range for international.
