Apr 25, 2018 at 14:07 comment added Patricia Shanahan @YuriSchimke But if they had let you continue you would have written an entirely different comment, one much less likely to discourage being in Russia without a valid visa.
Jun 27, 2016 at 14:14 comment added Yuri Schimke We had this happen to us, trying to exit on a train that was crossing the border a couple of hours after our visa ended. It ended with us being lectured for hours. Then ironically being dropped outside a police station to sort out a new 1 day visa and pay the fine. I say ironically because at this point we had no valid Visa and were left unmonitored in a small border town. Had they let us continue over the border we would have broken the Visa for less time.

Jun 24, 2016 at 21:49 comment added Jan I’ve heard that one should always request a visa for a day or two more in case delays happen @Crazydre
Jun 24, 2016 at 10:43 comment added Crazydre @Gerrit I've actually been asking myself the same!

Jun 23, 2016 at 14:47 comment added Crazydre @IanRingrose I'm 99% sure that's a myth. Even in Transnistria (the most corrupt of the former Soviet states) they don't do that. Yes, they threatened to destroy my passport and put me in jail for 20 years for illegal Immigration (because I wasn't checked on entry and so didn't get a Migration Card, but was checked on Exit), but when I remained unafraid they eventually backed off
Jun 23, 2016 at 11:46 comment added Mark Mayo Nobody else mentioned anything about bribes and being beaten up?!! We're merely talking about border guards not allowing you in early. That's all this answer contains.
Jun 23, 2016 at 11:43 comment added Ian Ringrose @MarkMayo, most countries don't have a system where the payment of bribes not to get beaten up by the police etc, is considered normal.
Jun 23, 2016 at 11:25 comment added Mark Mayo @IanRingrose I don't think they're unique in this respect, most countries frown heavily against visa misuse.
Jun 23, 2016 at 10:49 comment added Ian Ringrose I think the correct answer is that "not worth the risk going to Russia"....
Jun 23, 2016 at 10:37 comment added gerrit I wonder what would happen if the border crossing was scheduled at 22:00 but the train is delayed and passes after midnight...
