Aug 27, 2020 at 21:14 comment added Crazydre @Rich Again, currently per the EU freedom of movement directive, all EU/EFTA/UK citizens have a principal right to enter an EU/EFTA country or the UK, unless on public safety/health grounds. As such any proof of citizenship, valid or expired, must be accepted as such
Aug 27, 2020 at 12:56 comment added Rich @Crazydre not quite true. the French ID card is a strange one because certain cards (based upon date of issue) are valid for another five years after the expiry date. Different countries have different interpretations of this. Belgium for example has explicitly said it doesn't recognise the expired-but-not-expired cards. Other countries have said that they do recognise it. The UK has said nothing but so far has let people enter...not a very clear situation.
Aug 10, 2020 at 11:31 comment added Crazydre @Rich After the transition period it'll be up to the UK government to decide; currently it has no business refusing entry to established French citizens other than if they constitute a safety/health threat.
Aug 10, 2020 at 9:13 comment added Rich @Crazydre I mean before the change in requirements at the end of the year: how likely is it that an attempt to cross with an 'expired' French ID card will be rejected?
Aug 9, 2020 at 13:48 comment added Crazydre @Rich "EU nationals needing a passport instead of an ID card to enter the UK" Based on my latest correspondence, it appears that won't entirely be the case.
Jul 20, 2020 at 6:52 comment added Rich @blackbird, are you able to check if this information is still valid? In the run up to the changes at the end of the year (EU nationals needing a passport instead of an ID card to enter the UK) I am wondering whether the requirements have changed...

Sep 30, 2015 at 22:06 comment added Gilles 'SO- stop being evil' Where do they get their information? The problem with extended validity French ID cards is that France says that their validity has been extended, but there's no indication on the card itself, and some governments have said that whatever France says, they would only accept the validity date that's written on the card.
