    When UK crossings have a telephone warning system, the rail track will get a stop signal until the road vehicle is clear. Hence the need for the second phone call when the crossing is clear again.

  • Naturally most of the commonwealth has inherited a similar requirement for busses to stop at railway lines.

    @Criggie That is not a British requirement. So it's not a Commonwealth thing. It is a US thing. In UK rail all level crossings are gated and controlled by signals - that is not true in the US
