I wonder if those automated machines would happily work if you just use a laminated copy of your passports photo page...– JonathanReez ♦Commented Oct 6, 2018 at 7:31

It's likely because the document type code of the passport card is IP, which the kiosk may not be programmed for. My ID (code I) works flawlessly at the KLM kiosk in Birmingham– CrazydreCommented Oct 6, 2018 at 8:16

@Coke Yes, your question prompted me to look at my documents. I plan to post a question on the subject. The MRI of my full size passports start P<GBR and P<IRL but my passport card uses a totally different format: IPIRL and the following data is arranged quite differently. So, this was my problem rather than that it was a card. The card scanned immediately without problems at the desk. If so, it is annoying that Ireland don't use I<IRL. I need a third nationality.– badjohnCommented Oct 6, 2018 at 8:34

@badjohn The "type" covers two characters, and the "country" space three characters, and different countries' IDs use them differently. For example, in Germany it's IDD<<, in France IDFRA and in Sweden I<SWE. All of these work, I've been told. It's rather the IP designation that's making life difficult for the kiosks, if I had to guess.– CrazydreCommented Oct 6, 2018 at 8:41

@Coke I added a new question on the format of the MRI. travel.stackexchange.com/questions/123445/…– badjohnCommented Oct 6, 2018 at 10:02

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. air-travel), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
