Jan 26, 2019 at 13:16 comment added David Richerby @fkraiem and anyone else voting to close: this is an extrememly useful question, and we regularly close other questions as duplicates of it. It's possible that new answers will still be valuable. I agree that the question is broad, but it is clearly not too broad to answer, since it has plenty of answers. I feel it would be harmful to close this.

Feb 27, 2018 at 12:52 comment added fkraiem VTC as too broad as there are too many variables (origin country, bank, destination country, among others) that have a lot of influence on the answer.

Jul 1, 2015 at 15:12 comment added pbu Travelers checks are thing of the past, besides this they are expensive. Use prepaid currency cards instead of TC. Cash machines have become popular and much cheaper option. Carrying cash is good but some exchange offices are ripoffs can be fatal xchange rates.

Jun 2, 2012 at 6:23 comment added BrendanMcK @AndrewGrimm: for Japan, all you need to do is find a 7-11 (they are all over!) and use one of the ATMs there, as those ones take western cards.

Feb 4, 2012 at 11:19 comment added Jacco @Andrew Grimm, thats what I was told, several times. So far, I've not found a country where it was more convienient or cheaper to use travelcheckes; Not in East- or West African countries, not in South Africa. Not In South East Asia, not in Russia or the states hugging it's southern border, not in China nor Mongolia. Not in the countries on the west of South America. And not in the Magreb or UAE either. So, if there are still countries where traveller checks are more convienient than the ATM, name those countries! A general non-veriviable oneliner is not very helpfull otherwise.
Feb 3, 2012 at 9:09 comment added Golden Cuy @Jacco: Depends on the country.

Jun 23, 2011 at 21:35 comment added dbkk Traveler's checks can be a pain, I've seen a friend go through a multiple-day ordeal trying to cash them in the Philippines. I have no idea what is the draw of those. Is it the ability to cancel them? Surely can't be the issue and redeem fees?
