Ukrainian President Zelenskyy replaces military commander amid 'abuse of power' reports

Amid discontent over losses, Lieutenant General Sodol was replaced with Brigadier General Gnatov due to accusations of incompetence. The decision followed complaints from the Azov brigade and disagreements on war management, highlighting the challenges faced during the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replaced Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol with Brigadier General Andriy Gnatov on Monday, after accusations of incompetence and abuse of power during the Russian invasion.
The announcement was made during Zelenskyy's daily evening address, in which he said, "I have decided to replace the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol, with Brigadier General Andriy Gnatov." However, Zelenskyy did not provide specific reason for dismissal.

Bogdan Krotevych, a commander from the Azov brigade, filed a complaint with the SBU security service, urging an investigation into Sodol. Krotevych accused Sodol of incompetence and blamed him for the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers at the front, according to AP reports
Also, in a recent post on Telegram by Krotevych, refraining from naming anyone directly, accused a certain general of being responsible for the deaths of more Ukrainian soldiers than any Russian general. "What I do care about is that combat battalion and brigade commanders are put on trial for losing an observation post, but a general is not put on trial for losing regions, dozens of cities and thousands of soldiers," Krotevych wrote, quoted by Reuters. "All the military personnel now understand who I am talking about because 99 percent of the military hate him for what he does," he added.
The replacement comes at a time when Ukraine, under-resourced compared to Russia, has been on the defensive in the east. Russian forces have advanced slowly, capturing new villages almost every week without making a significant breakthrough.
In February, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, another top military official, was relieved of his duties following public disagreements with Zelenskyy regarding the war's management. The dismissal came after Commander Zaluzhnyi openly expressed views that diverged from the president's approach to the conflict
