In 1986, a 21-year-old Aamir Khan married his neighbor, 19-year-old Reena Dutta, in a secret court wedding. Aamir later revealed that the entire wedding cost him less than Rs 10, as he took a bus to the marriage registrar's office.
Aamir and Reena's love story began in the early 1980s, when Reena initially rejected Aamir's proposal. However, the two eventually started dating and Reena even made a cameo appearance in the song Papa Kehte Hain from Aamir's debut film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.
Recalling his "economical" wedding, Aamir said in an old interview with Rediff, "I got married to Reena secretly through court marriage, with three witnesses.
My wedding with Reena was most economical. I took Bus 211 and bought a ticket of 50 paise. I got down at Bandra station West, crossed the bridge, landed in the east and walked towards the highway. I crossed that highway and entered Griha Nirman Bhavan, where there is a marriage registrar office. So my wedding cost me less than Rs 10."
However, the couple's marital bliss was short-lived. After 16 years of marriage, Aamir and Reena parted ways in 2002, a decision Aamir later described as "traumatic" for both of them and their families.
"Reena and I were married for 16 long years. When we split up, it was traumatic for us and our families. We tried to deal with the situation as best as we could. Reena and I did not lose love or respect for each other post our split," Aamir shared on Koffee With Karan in 2018.
The divorce also had a lasting impact on their children, Ira and Junaid. Ira has often spoken about how her parents' separation profoundly affected her mental health.

After his divorce from Reena, Aamir went on to marry filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The couple welcomed their son, Azad, through surrogacy in 2011. However, in 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their decision to part ways, though they continue to maintain a friendly relationship. They recently collaborated for Laapataa Ladies, which was highly acclaimed by the critics.

Despite the ups and downs in his personal life, Aamir Khan has remained one of Bollywood's most respected and successful actors. He is currently gearing up for Sitaare Zameen Par, which is set to release in December this year.
