With the success of the blockbuster 'Soorarai Pottru' starring Suriya, filmmaker Sudha Kongara is now preparing its Hindi remake titled 'Sarfira', featuring Akshay Kumar. During a recent interview, Sudha revealed the challenges she faced in the first week of shooting with Akshay. She wanted him to emulate Suriya’s performance, which made him uncomfortable.
However, Akshay later explained his approach to her, leading them to a better understanding.
Talking to Galatta Plus, Sudha said that she has known Suriya for over 25 years, and it’s much easier to tell him what she wants. It’s very friendly and casual. But with Akshay, it’s ‘sir’ first of all, and she was meeting him for the first time. Since she had no filters, it was almost similar. The first six days, he wasn’t happy. He was like, ‘What is this girl making me do all this rubbish?’ So then he and the producer spoke to Sudha, and she said, ‘You do whatever you like to do, and I will tell you when it isn’t going right.’ Sudha also had to let go because she had created the perfect Maara in her head, and she thought there could be nobody better than Suriya, and that’s how it had to be played. She soon realized that she was suffocating this actor, who had his own method, so she had to let go.
Sudha shared how she and Akshay found common ground. After six days of shooting, she showed him a cut of a particular scene. The following day, Akshay approached her and explained that while he has his own method and process for performing, this was the first time he was attempting to understand her vision. He was trying to align with her expectations. Sudha responded that she loved it. From that moment on, they made peace and enjoyed a wonderful time shooting together.
'Soorarai Pottru' is based on GR Gopinath's life, who founded India's low-cost airline, Deccan. The film received critical acclaim and was selected as one of ten Indian films for the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.
