An honorary doctorate has been awarded to author Amitav Ghosh by the University of Siena in Tuscany – which was founded in 1240 and is the oldest university in Italy. The author took to Instagram to share photos from the event and shared this new milestone with his followers.
He captioned the post: 'Wonderful to receive an honorary doctorate from the 786 year old University of Siena, in this beautiful old hall.
It was an honor to sign my name in the university's splendidly illuminated roster and to listen to the choir singing ''Viva to the professors"! Also enjoyed meeting students who'd written dissertations on my work. My special thanks to the Rector, Prof. Roberto di Pietra for his hospitality, and Prof. Elena Spandri for her superb Laudatio. Even though this was my sixth it was very special because it coincided with the Palio, an event I have long been obsessed with. The final race was rained out the last two days but all the indications are that it will be completed today. Can't wait! (sic)'
In addition to the Padma Shri award from the Indian government and the 54th Jnanpith prize, Amitav Ghosh has won other notable accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award.
