You’ll have a new tequila to sip on International Tequila Day! Megan Thee Stallion announced at Adweek’s Social Media Week (SMW) in April 2024 that she’s launching a tequila brand. The Houston rapper discussed how to stay authentic while standing out on social media and her brand partnerships with companies like Nike and Planet Fitness.

Hip-hop artists have a history tied to promoting and starting alcohol brands.

In 1994, Wu-Tang Clan was featured in a 30-second commercial for St. Ides, who was not popular at the time. The malt liquor brand, manufactured by Pabst Brewing Company, also made ads with more than 12 popular hip-hop artists. Those artists included Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, and Notorious B.I.G., to name a few. St. Ides, with no ties to hip-hop, built its identity around the genre.

MTS, a three-time grammy-winning rapper, joins several celebrities who have entered the tequila game. Celebrities start their own alcohol brands for various reasons, from personal interest to diversifying their income. Statista forecasts that by 2028, the alcoholic drinks market will be a $2.1 trillion industry. This projection is based on sales increasing for the past eight years.

As to why tequila specifically, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reveals that since 2002, domestic tequila sales have grown by 180 percent. The U.S. and Mexico consume 85 percent of tequila sales. The States surpasses Mexico in consumption, being the biggest destination for tequila exports.

Leveraging her fame, the 29-year-old joins other Black celebrities with tequila brands, including Michael Jordon (Cincoro), LeBron James (Lobos), Kevin Hart (Gran Coramino), and rapper E-40 (E. Cuarenta).

“As long as you keep doing things that are true to you and feel good to you, you’ll get the audience you want to attract,” Megan shared at Adweek. “You don’t want to be a walking commercial. You should do things that make you feel good … you’ll create more moments that way.”

Along with new music, Megan will be on tour for the summer.

Megan is releasing new music independently now. In late 2023, the Billboard-charting rapper founded Hot Girl Productions, her independent music and entertainment company. In February 2024, Megan signed a distribution deal with Warner Music Group.

“As a businesswoman, I’ve learned you don’t have to take no for an answer,” MTS shared in her April 2024 Adweek cover story. “Sometimes in this industry … especially being a woman … especially being a Black woman … people don’t even present you with all of your options. They don’t even tell you everything that you could get.”

You might hear more about Megan Thee Stallion’s tequila brand while she’s on tour. The Hot Girl Summer Tour starts on May 14, 2024, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and ends July 27, 2024, at the Broccoli City Festival in Washington, D.C. And remember, whether you drink your tequila chilled, neat, or in a mixed drink, drink responsibly.
