CFERE releases report

Dean Majumdar’s message to the school community on the report released by the university’s Committee on Funding for Energy Research and Education

Dear SDSS community,

This morning, the university’s Committee on Funding for Energy Research and Education (CFERE) released their report. The committee, led by Paul Brest and Debra Satz, engaged broadly with the Stanford community, external stakeholders, and experts to consider the university’s approach to engaging with fossil fuel companies. The news story, including the full report, appears in today’s Stanford Report.

I want to thank Paul, Debra and the whole CFERE committee for all their efforts. We will be partnering with the CFERE committee to provide opportunities to discuss and ask questions about the committee’s work via a zoom meeting this summer and in person during the upcoming fall quarter.

Among the committee’s conclusions is a recommendation for greater oversight of industrial affiliates programs across the university. The school had already begun this effort in earnest by making information about the programs affiliated with SDSS easily available and working with the Vice Provost and Dean of Research on an Industrial Affiliates Review Committee (IARC) to ensure they are in alignment with university guidelines. The IARC is expected to release their report this summer.

The committee also recommended additional efforts across the university to strengthen collaboration externally and further climate solutions, which will include our efforts aiding companies and countries in developing energy transition pathways and building an alliance of companies who have made commitments to achieve net-zero emissions.

Best,
Arun
