Why does adding CPU cores make programs run faster?

Intel currently offers a 5.5GHz CPU, which represents the number of instructions the CPU can execute over time. If a CPU has more than one core, it can execute more than one process at a time. However,...

Threads (versus cores) and rated CPU clock speed, what is the effect?

If my CPU is rated at 2GHz, and has 4 cores supporting 8 threads, are all 8 threads running at the rated clock speed? Or are they running at 1GHz each since there are twice as many threads as cores?

How much the CPU clock speed matters over number of cores? [duplicate]

I was comparing various desktop/server processors on Intel's website and found that Xenon Coprocessor family constitutes 61 cores. (firstly, this name lead me to think as if this would be a secondary ...

Multi-core CPU: can I say I have a 3x2.1GHz=6.3GHz CPU?

I have an AMD A6-3500 three-core CPU. AMD System Monitor shows each core with a maximum 2100 MHz. This also shows in AMD OverDrive. Does this processor run at the speed 3*2100 MHz? Edit Can I say ...

Clock frequency, number of cores , threads

I'm really confused. What determines the speed of the CPU/processor? Some compared a dual core with 2.8ghz and a 2.4ghz quad-core and say the quadcore is better. But when it comes to a dual core ...

Which property of CPUs is good for what?

Back in the days clock frequency used to be THE criteria to compare CPUs (or perhaps you had to take into account whether it was a DX or SX). The world was simple back then, but in these fast evolving ...

How do I calculate clock speed in multi-core processors?

Is it correct to say, for example, that a processor with four cores each running at 3GHz is in fact a processor running at 12GHz? I once got into a "Mac vs. PC" argument (which by the way is NOT the ...
