Worked for me until I saved the doc, closed it, and re-opened it. ARGH!

This worked for me until I re-opened the file. What worked permanently for me was to do this above, then right click on the problem style in the Style Gallery and select "Update to Match Selection". What a mess.

This helped, but after reopening the file the problem was the same. Fixing this steps and then saving as .doc (not .docx) helped.
