I'm surprised no one mentioned the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc You can REALLY mess up someone's day by screwing with the services file or hosts file.

Try adding the line

127.0.0.1 google.com

To the hosts file. Easy to diagnose if you know about it. Not at all easy if you have no idea.
