My simple trick to GIF conversion is Handbrakethe HandBrake/ffmpeg NLmeans filter. In HandBrake, just tick the NLMeans options in the video config tab. 

It smooths out GIFthe rough GIF image, making it more easily compressable. The output looks nicer AND has a smaller size.
