    Regarding the dropped HDD: By now I have pretty definitive evidence that the drive is done. For example, by running fsck, data is disappearing. Re-running fsck makes other data disappear. I had a backup beforehand. (Not having one - even for data that is on a healthy storage device, seems like living on the edge ;-).) The end of the story is: I got a new storage device and copied the data from the backup. The dropped HDD is retired now.
