I found a way to hide it in the latest version: First, click on the vertical button ▶ so that the panel turns into a column of icons, and then click on the bottom icon, which looks like |→. Also need to check on the box Remember current state of Tools Pane (Edit > Preferences > Documents)

@ViH can you please explain in more detail what you mean? I don't know where the "vertical button" is or what panel you are referring to.
