Just tested with git 2.30.1 on Mac, and I could not reproduce the "duplicate entries" problem.

create code fences with backticks ` or tildes ~

put returns between paragraphs
for linebreak add 2 spaces at end

backtick escapes `like _so_`
quote by placing > at start of line
