Well if you open 2 pipes, then you get bidi behavior too.

Absolutely dumb question but what is "shared memory"? I've messed around with shm_open but I need to notify a process that I have incoming work it needs to do - which I don't think that does. Is shared memory the same thing as a memory mapped file?
