As you mentioned the loss of Korolev may not have made a difference in the end, because as you said (and mentioned by others) the program started late. Would you be able to elaborate on this aspect, i.e. some details on how and when the Russian program started and maybe how early they would have needed to start it? $\endgroup$ Commented Mar 20 at 14:08
