American Eagle and Aerie Team Up for Athleisure Denim

A new collection demonstrates the strengths of AEO Inc.’s two brands, American Eagle and Aerie.

This week the brands unveiled A Match Made in Denim, a soft and stretchy athleisure collection that looks like denim. The limited-edition collection is inspired by AE’s best-selling jeans and uses the same innovations that make Aerie products soft and comfortable. It is their first ever collaboration.

“A Match Made in Denim combines the best of our iconic American Eagle jeans and the buttery softness that makes our Aerie intimates fan favorites by using the magic of innovative technology,” said Jennifer Foyle, president, executive creative director for both brands.

One technology the designers used to create denim effects is called cool transfer, which takes the fabric characteristics from AE’s denim designs and transfers them to other fabrics. Sports bras and leggings feature the salt-and-pepper look of ’90s denim. The bottoms also include a printed trompe-l’œil back pocket and unfinished hems.

Designers applied special dyeing and washing techniques to the garments. Seams on underwear and sports bras mimic the washed down effect of jeans. Items like a corset denim top and a sports bra have a light cloudy wash.

The 34-piece collection spans tube dresses, zip-up jackets, wrap skorts, sweatshirts, T-shirts, joggers, sports bras, intimates, leggings and men’s underwear. A line of women’s swimwear offers a one-piece, bikini and sarong with a dark denim look.

Denim accessories like a polka dot cap, bucket hat, scrunchie, bag and sneakers round out the collection.

The collection allows the brands to capitalize on the “denim dressing” trend and reflects how their consumers shop.

“We know our best customers shop across brands and this collection amplifies the power of AE and Aerie, while perfectly showcasing our best-selling categories during this year’s particularly strong jeans cycle, Foyle said.

Foyle added that the collaboration is the first of several launches the brands have planned over the next few months.

The collection retails for $7.95-$69.95 and is exclusively available at AEO’s unique store concept, The Gateway, in New York City and online at AE.com and Aerie.com.
