Build Community. Feel Prepared. Learn.

The SOAR program offers incoming first-year students at Stanford an opportunity to take free summer online courses in foundational mathematics and writing. With small class experiences, personalized curriculum, and a friendly learning community, we cultivate positive, preparatory learning experiences for future mathematics and writing courses at Stanford.

SOAR Math and SOAR Writing are both five weeks long and each course will allow students to earn 1 credit toward their autumn quarter course load. There is no cost to participating in these courses.

We will be offering two options for SOAR this year: an early summer session (June 24-July 26) and a late summer session (July 29-August 30).

We're now accepting applications for SOAR 2024. Click on the programs below to apply.

Our Programs

SOAR Mathematics

SOAR Math builds on and enriches students' fundamental prerequisite skills in foundational mathematics to prepare students for success in Calculus and further mathematics courses at Stanford University.

SOAR Writing

SOAR Writing helps incoming first-year Stanford students develop greater confidence in their academic writing practice and prepare them for taking PWR 1, ESF, or ITALIC 95W during their first year.

Application Process

Any incoming Stanford students who has accepted their offer of admission can apply to the SOAR Programs.  A SUNET ID is required to apply.  Applications are now open for the 2024 Sessions of SOAR Math and SOAR Writing.  The application deadline for our early summer session is May 31; the application deadline for our late summer session is June 24.
