opening quote icon The Saatva’s coil-on-coil design makes the mattress feel very solid and supportive, even compared to other innersprings and hybrids we’ve tested. Both coil layers also promote steady airflow, so the mattress sleeps fairly cool. opening quote icon

Saatva Classic Mattress: Our Verdict

As a professional sleep coach, I’ve made it my mission to help others get the best sleep they can; I know how important sleep is to supporting mental and physical health. Especially after my son was born, I realized how precious a commodity sleep can really be and how much it matters to my own wellbeing.

Choosing a mattress that’s just right for your needs is absolutely key. That’s why I was excited to test out the popular Saatva Classic Mattress, which is fully customizable: You get to choose your own thickness and firmness. So — in theory, at least — it should have the perfect version for every type of sleeper. And it comes with an impressive 365-day home trial to boot.

I tested the Saatva Classic Mattress alongside our dedicated testing team of 10, headed up by Dr. Michael J. Breus, Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, Fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and a sleep doctor in private practice for 25 years.

And while you can certainly find cheaper mattresses out there, you won’t likely find another that’s as solid a value as this innerspring mattress with free white glove delivery. At a mid-range price point in the affordable luxury mattress category, it’s packed with quality materials and features often found in much pricier beds.

Saatva Mattress Video Review

Watch our video review of the Saatva Classic to get a hands-on look at the bed’s construction and performance. Our product tester offers notes on pressure relief, support, and other key performance features.

About the Saatva Classic Mattress: An Intro

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with an organic cotton cover. It has two layers of coils inside, meant to help make it supportive, responsive, and also help air circulate through the mattress so you sleep cooler.

This mattress uses both those two rows of coils as well as memory foam to provide a balance between support and pressure relief. That means it’s a good option for a wide range of sleepers.

A key selling point is that it comes in three firmness options (soft, medium firm, and firm) plus two height options (11.5 and 14.5 inches).

Appealingly, it also comes with free White Glove delivery to the continental U.S. and a generous 365-day home trial.

Our Key Findings: What It’s Like to Sleep on the Saatva Classic Mattress

Because the Saatva mattress lets you customize important variables, we found it worked well for many different sleeper types. The height didn’t change much in terms of our testers’ experience. But the firmness is a biggie that really affected our comfort: We found that sleepers under 130 pounds preferred the soft option, and those over 230 pounds were most comfortable with the firm option. Sleepers in between generally liked the medium-firm version best.

I’m a side sleeper and I felt great on this bed. The other side sleepers and back sleepers on our testing team also found options that worked well for them. But stomach sleepers typically need a firmer mattress in order to get good spinal alignment and support, and we found that the softest option didn’t work for most of the stomach sleepers on our team who weigh more than 130 pounds.

We found the mattress responsive and supportive overall. The coils made movement easy, and the foam also helped ease pressure on the body.

The breathable cotton cover and dual layer really helped circulate air for a cooler sleep. We gave it top marks for temperature regulation and recommend it for any hot sleeper. As a hot sleeper myself, this is an important factor for me and the Saatva Classic did not disappoint.

Pros

  • Organic cotton cover and Euro-top provide a cool sleep surface
  • Memory foam and individually wrapped microcoils offer support and bounce
  • High-density foam and coils in the core provide good edge support and airflow

Cons

  • Dual-coil construction does not isolate motion well
  • Multiple firmness options have varied performance – consider your sleep needs before selecting a model
  • $99 shipping fee on returns

What Other Reviewers Say

Because of its popularity, this mattress has been reviewed by many other labs and trusted online reviewers. And other experts generally underscore our findings that it’s among the best mattresses for the cost.

Wirecutter’s reviewer noted some of the same top highlights we did: the generous trial period, the quality materials, the lifetime warranty. It also points out this is one of the few innerspring mattresses you can buy online, with a white glove setup – noting it won’t come compressed in a box.

Sleepopolis underscored our findings in its review as well, noting it’s a “bouncy, high-quality mattress with durability and great edge support,” and concluding it’s “a nice option for back sleepers, combination sleepers, and couples.

Good Housekeeping, which tested the mattress for a full decade, rated it their best mattress of 2024 — and one of the testers there in fact called it the “best mattress ever.”

What Real Customers Say

Real customers agreed. “I’m a back and occasional side sleeper, and absolutely love this bed,” one real reviewer said, adding the caveat: “My husband is a stomach sleeper and would prefer his bed to be a tiny bit firmer.”

Another reviewer wrote, “I expected a ‘firm’ mattress, but maybe it’s just a matter of getting used to it.” That said, the reviewer was overall pleased with the bed: “I love my new Saatva classic full, luxury firm mattress.”

Do note that perception of firmness isn’t universal among real-world reviewers. “This is a nice mattress, but it is NOT soft,” one reviewer wrote. “If you like a firm mattress, Saatva Classic may be for you. If, like me, you are used to a plush pillow-top mattress and you want a soft plush mattress, you should keep looking.”

Our Performance Ratings

During testing in our sleep lab, we evaluated the Saatva Mattress across several key performance categories

Our testing team members are sleep experts who have spent years testing products in our Seattle Test Lab as well as in their own homes, under real-world conditions. Our testers include people with all sorts of body types and sleep styles (so there’s surely someone representing your needs and preferences, no matter what they are).

We applied our rigorous testing methodology to the Saatva Classic Mattress review process, evaluating the mattress across many specific categories — checking for qualities like firmness and durability, plus how it isolates motion, and how supportive the edges are.

Here’s a summary of the findings from our extensive testing. The results are based on a 10-point scale, with 1 being poor and 10 being excellent.

Movement Isolation

Rating: 7/10 (Plush Soft), 6.5/10 (Luxury Firm), 6/10 (Firm)

Foam beds are good at isolating motion because they absorb movement and vibrations. On the flip side, innerspring mattresses are more responsive because of the coils inside. Indeed, this mattress is quite responsive, because it has two layers of coils. So you can expect to feel some of your partner’s movements during the night. That said, the softer version of this mattress is better at absorbing motion than the firmer ones.

Perimeter Support

Rating: 8/10 (Plush Soft), 8.5/10 (Luxury Firm), 9/10 (Firm)

This mattress feels sturdy and supportive because of the high-density foam and coil layers. So you can use more of the surface of the bed without sinking. The firmer versions do have more edge support than the softer ones, as you might expect. But all versions of this mattress provide good support around the edges — regardless of firmness.

Durability

Rating: 7/10 (Plush Soft), 8.5/10 (Luxury Firm), 7/10 (Firm)

Put simply, Saatva beds are well made with quality materials. This mattress uses high-density foam and strong coils. For those reasons, we expect it to last even longer than the typical 6 years or so for innerspring mattresses, and we give it high marks in the durability category.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 8.5/10 (Plush Soft), 7.5/10 (Luxury Firm), 6.5/10 (Firm)

The combination of coils and foam strike a good balance between responsiveness and pressure relief in all of the firmness options. This mattress keeps the pressure off your midsection and cushions your shoulders and hips. It keeps your spine well aligned, and therefore can keep any soreness at bay.

Odor Emissions

Rating: 9.5/10

We give this mattress close to a perfect score in this category. Mattresses often have a mild chemical smell when you first unpack them, which comes from the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the foam used in construction. Saatva mattresses do not contain enough foam for VOCs to be a problem.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 8/10 (Plush Soft), 8.5/10 (Luxury Firm), 9/10 (Firm)

Regardless of their weight, our testers found it relatively easy to get out of bed and change sleep positions with this mattress. The inner coils provide a bouncy surface that makes it easy to move around without sinking.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 8.5/10 (Plush Soft), 10/10 (Luxury Firm, Firm)

This is where this mattress really excels. Its coil construction keeps air circulating, making it ideal for temperature regulation.

What our tester thinks
opening quote icon If you sleep with a partner and awaken easily due to movement in bed, the Saatva Classic may cause sleep disruptions. Motion isolation was limited during our tests — we noticed a fair amount of bounce on all three models. opening quote icon

Where Can You Buy a Saatva Classic Mattress?

Saatva only sells its mattresses on its website, but you can experience the mattresses for yourself at one of the brand’s “viewing rooms” around the country. Check the website for the location nearest to you.

Saatva Classic Mattress Shipping

Saatva offers free white glove delivery, and only ships its mattresses within the continental United States. (If you live outside that area, you can work with a freight forwarder to get your mattress shipped to your door.)

White glove delivery means the brand hand delivers your mattress and sets it up in the room of your choice (no, there are no actual gloves involved — just full service).

They’ll also remove your old mattress and foundation (with some exceptions) if you choose.

After the mattress passes quality control, it’s transferred to a local delivery partner, who will contact you (usually within 2 to 7 days) to schedule delivery. The evening before delivery, the local partner will reach out to provide a four-hour delivery window on the scheduled date.

Saatva Classic Mattress Sleep Trial

Saatva offers a generous 365-night home trial of all mattresses, so you have a full year to decide if you want to keep it. If you do choose to return it, the brand will arrange to pick it up for return or exchange with a $99 processing fee.
